Moving Forward to Independence

For over 40 years The Salvation Army’s Booth Packaging and Supportive Services in Toronto has provided high quality contract packaging at the right price and on time. Unlike most other packing services, the men and women at Booth Packaging and Supportive Services (Booth Packaging) are participants in a vocational rehabilitation program to improve their work skills and prospects for employment in the community.

Booth Packaging, a work training program for adults with mental health needs and/or developmental disabilities, offers its participants varied work activity, skills assessment and progressive job training in a factory setting. Participants and staff work together to complete light assembly and packaging contracts using a variety of industrial, shipping and office machines. They have high standards of excellence.

“Our participants are encouraged to build work skills and confidence at their own pace.” says Karen Brown, work floor supervisor. “All while providing valuable services to the business industry.”

Peter started at Booth Packaging in 2010. He can run a variety of jobs on the work floor and has also served as an instructor and tester. In 2014 he graduated to a senior level position and works in the shipping department as a senior material handler.

 “I come every day,” says Peter. “It keeps my mind and body busy. I feel important here.”

Marlene is training to become a work floor instructor. She was nervous when she first came to the program but has since gained a lot of confidence. On any given day she hand-sews 300 teddy bear eyes to help fulfill a contract.

“I feel really good here,” says Marlene. “I’ve met new friends and have settled into a routine. That’s an accomplishment for me.”

Jason started at Booth in 2001 working small jobs such as labelling and counting. He has worked hard to become an Associate Instructor on the high speed shrink wrapping machine.

“Coming here keeps me positive and occupied. I feel good when I’m helping people,” says Jason.

Booth also offers certifications in Lift Truck Operations, Health & Safety, WHMIS, and Keyboarding.

“We are committed to supporting and training every participant that comes here to bring out their fullest potential,” says Brown. “What a wonderful feeling it is to watch participants at our program grow personally and professionally.”
