  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
  • Travel is associated with this position; providing transportation for youth will be required on occasion.
  • Providing service to St. Thomas and Elgin County.

Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday and includes a ½-hour unpaid meal break where applicable. Shift day and times are subject to client and volunteer availability. Some evenings and weekends will be required.

Normal location of work is: 539 Talbot Street, St. Thomas, ON

Responsibilities

  1. Case Management
  • Receive referrals to Program from Crown, Police and/or Probation Services, Educators, and/or Community Partners.
  • Conduct Intake Assessments, including Young Person, parent/guardian and v
  • Maintain legible, accurate and timely case notes.
  • Case preparation and documentation.
  • Facilitation, Schedule, the Create your Skate Program.
  • Thorough training, use of equipment for all Youth participating in the Create Your Skate Program.
  • Act as a mentor and positive role model for Youth.
  • Act as an advocate for Youth and their families.
  • Participate in “on-call” rotation for 211 – Homelessness Initiative.
  1. Volunteers
  • Recruit and screen potential volunteers.
  • Mentor and support student placements.
  • Provide direction, train, support and supervise volunteers and ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization.
  • Responsible for preparing volunteer roster and files.
  • Ensure that all volunteers maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify any training needs and report to supervisor.
  1. Agencies and Community Resources
    • Community development to increase awareness of Community Alternatives for Youth in Elgin County.
    • Facilitate group and/or one-to-one Community Alternatives for Youth and Community Learning Hub Programs as referred.
    • Weekly contact with Probation and attend Youth Court.
    • Work as an advocate for Youth with Community agencies including Police Services, Crown, Mental Health, Probation, Education, Justice Sector, Housing, etc.

 

  • Facilitate and promote the Community Alternatives for Youth with Community Partners in Elgin County.

 

  1. Administration
  • Complete monthly submission of Salvation Army – SAMIS statistics.
  • Complete Statistical Reports for the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services and United Way.
  • Prepare for and participate in annual program review for United Way.
  • Prepare for and participate in Salvation Army Accreditation and Divisional Reviews.
  • Prepare/submit case notes, court reports, monthly and quarterly statistical forms to the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services and The Salvation Army.
  • Process Referrals, Intakes and Completions.
  • Develop promotional materials.
  1. Health and Safety:
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Act as the certified JH&S representative for the St. Thomas Office.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

 

CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:

Governance Boards and Councils:

   Internal:

  • Supervisor, staff and volunteers, Community Council.

   External:

  • Community, Crown, Clients, attends and support Elgin Youth Justice Steering Committee and the Community Action Network Meetings.
  • Attend all scheduled Elgin County Youth Court dates as required.
  • Liaise with Steering Committee and Community and Justice partners.

 

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position reports directly to the Executive Director or designate.
  • Assist with the recruitment, development and training of Volunteers and Student placements.

 

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Issue NRO Thrift Store Voucher Forms.
  • Support process of Volunteer expenses.
  • Order, maintain/manage supplies and inventory for Create Your Skate and Health & Safety Programs.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed two (2) or more years of Community College, i.e. Social Services Diploma or equivalent diploma is required.
  • An Undergraduate Degree in Social Services preferred.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification.
  • Roarockit Training Certification
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required with $2 million in liability insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Must provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience, preference in community programs working with adult and youth at risk.
  • Working knowledge of the area and community resources of St. Thomas and Elgin
  • Knowledge and experience in restorative justice practices.
  • Good public relation skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal processes.
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Ability to adhere to The Salvation Army Standards of Conduct and Code of Ethics.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
