  • This is a permanent full-time position based on 37.5 hours per week
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required.
  • Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities.
  • Travel is associated with this position; providing transportation for youth will be required on occasion.
  • Providing service to Goderich and Huron County.

Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday and includes a ½-hour unpaid meal break where applicable. Shift day and times are subject to client and volunteer availability. Some evenings and weekends will be required.

Normal location of work is: 303 Suncoast Drive East, Goderich, ON

Responsibilities

Case Management

  • Receive referrals to Program from Crown, Police, Probation Services, Educators and/or Community Partners
  • Conduct Intake Assessments, including Young Person, parent/guardian and v
  • Maintain legible, accurate and timely case
  • Case preparation and
  • Scheduling, attendance and observation at Youth Justice Committee Conferences.
  • Track Youth Justice Committee case progress and meeting
  • Act as a mentor and positive role model for Youth.
  • Act as an advocate for Youth and their families.

 

Volunteers

  • Recruit and screen potential volunteers.
  • Conduct initial and ongoing training of Youth Justice Committee volunteer
  • Mentor and support student placements.
  • Provide direction, train, support and supervise volunteers and ensure that they work together to achieve the purposes of the organization.
  • Responsible for preparing volunteer roster and files.
  • Ensure that all volunteers maintain any mandatory training or certification; identify any training needs and report to supervisor.

 

Agencies and Community Resources

  • Community development to increase awareness of Youth Justice Committees in Huron County.
  • Conduct presentations, public education and awareness events.
  • Facilitate group and/or one-to-one Community Alternatives for Youth and Community Learning Hub Programs as referred.
  • Weekly contact with Crown and attend Youth Court.
  • Work as an advocate for Youth with Community agencies including Police Services, Crown, Mental Health, Probation, Education, Justice Sector, Housing, etc.
  • Facilitate and promote the Youth Justice Committee, Extrajudicial Measures, Extrajudicial Sanctions and Direct Counseling Programs for Huron County.

 

Administration

  • Complete monthly submission of Salvation Army – SAMIS statistics.
  • Complete a monthly Youth Justice Committee Statistical Report to Ministry of Children Community and Social Services.
  • Prepare for and participate in annual program reviews of the Youth Justice Committee Program for Huron County.
  • Prepare for and participate in Salvation Army Accreditation and Divisional Reviews.
  • Prepare/submit case notes, court reports, monthly and quarterly statistical forms to the Ministry of Children Community and Social Services and The Salvation Army.
  • Process Referrals, Intakes and Completions.
  • Develop promotional materials.

 

Health and Safety:

  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Act as the Certified Joint Health and Safety Representative for the Goderich Office.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completed two (2) or more years of Community College, i.e. Social Services Diploma or equivalent diploma is required.
  • An Undergraduate Degree in Social Services preferred.
  • Valid First Aid/CPR Certification
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Certification
  • Restorative Justice Circle Training.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required with $2 million in liability insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Must provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

 

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

  • Minimum of two (2) year of prior related experience, preference in community programs working with adult and youth at risk.
  • Working knowledge of the area and community resources of Goderich and Huron
  • Knowledge and experience in restorative justice practices.
  • Good public relation skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal processes.
  • Proficient in working in a computerized environment; must demonstrate strong skills using Microsoft Office Suite: Word, Excel, Power Point
  • Ability to adhere to The Salvation Army Standards of Conduct and Code of Ethics.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
