This is a permanent, full-time position based on 32 hours per week This is a permanent full-time position based on 32 hours per week. Schedule may vary from week to week and include weekdays and Saturday’s.  The supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule. Flexibility in scheduling is required.

Normal hours of work:  as per the Thrift Store hours of operation, Monday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. During the summer months Fridays operating hours are 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Includes a 1/2-hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

  1. Operations
  • Receive, price, sort, load and unload, pack and store donations as directed.
  • Responsible for the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the warehouse, recycling and moving furniture, etc.
  • Operate warehouse equipment such as a pump cart as required.
  • Select donations for store distribution meeting established standards of quality and distinguishing between discarded and good quality merchandise according to company standards.
  • Contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards, proving service to customers and greeting customers.
  • Categorize and box seasonal clothing, bric, shoes etc. for storing.
  • Abide by store policy and procedures.
  • Work with volunteers as assigned.
  • May replenish inventory levels as directed.
  • May complete customer transactions including cash and debit sales.   


  • Inform your supervisor of all donor/customer complaints, comments and concerns regarding customer service, prices, merchandise, etc.

 Health & Safety

  • Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the warehouse area, tidy up and clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary, both inside and the exterior donation area at the rear of the building ensuring compliance with the health and safety standards.
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, and clean spillage.)
  • Handle the merchandise in a safe and organized manner; assist in stock rotation – “baling” items in the store.
  • Comply with all safety procedures and warehouse guidelines.
  • Perform other position related duties.


Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of Secondary School
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Have a minimum of six (6) months of prior related experience in warehouse processing or good distribution and knowledge of lifting guidelines.
  • Brand awareness would be a definite asset.
  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Ability to maintain information in confidence and exercise good judgement.
  • Ability to work independently and participate as an active and responsible team member in a cooperative team environment
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training, on-going professional development and training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies, procedures and associated legislation.
  • Mandatory requirement for steel-toe safety boots or shoes; universal precautions; safety gloves.
  • twisting, lifting, bending, crouching, reaching overhead, pushing, pulling and kneeling.
  • Ability to lift/move 45 pounds.
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority.
  • Self-motivated/disciplined.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
  • Lead by example, by demonstrating a strong work ethic and a willingness to learn and be flexible in the face of change.
  • Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
