This is a casual/relief position, with no standard weekly hours of work.

Normal Hours of Work:  Schedule may vary according to operational requirements; flexibility is required; may include afternoon and evening shifts, Monday through Saturday and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.  The supervisor will set the work schedule in consultation with the incumbent and may include shifts between 9:45 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday to Thursday;  9:45 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Friday; and, 9:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Saturday.

Responsibilities

The Thrift Store Clerk provides service to customers, sorts incoming product and assists in the ongoing retail operations of The Salvation Army Acton Thrift Store.

  • Protect the integrity of all donated items.
  • Open and close store including the daily balancing of cash.
  • Responsible for accurate completion of all customer transactions including cash and debit sales
  • Process raw materials by loading/unloading, sorting, packing, pricing and storing donations
  • Interact with customers/donors in a positive, friendly and courteous manner
  • Contribute to meeting store budgets by maintaining customer service standards.
  • Possess knowledge of stock in order to respond to customer enquiries by phone/in person.
  • Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g. snow removal, clear fire exits, cleans spillage).
  • Assist with store layout plans to attract customers, which include window displays and merchandise displays; ensures attractiveness of the store through “Tidy Maintenance”.
  • Replenish inventory levels based on supervisor’s directions.
  • Provide customer service and greeting customers
  • Contribute to the control of inventory by retrieving, sorting, hanging and pricing as directed.
  • Removal of inventory from sales floor as directed.
  • Maintain an attractive organized appearance of the store, tidy up and restock shelves, clean, sweep, dust and mop as necessary.
  • Abide by store policy and procedures.
  • Performs other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Qualifications and Certifications:

  • Completion of Secondary School.
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

 

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

  • Have a minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience.
  • Cash handling experience is required.
  • Knowledge and experience using a cash register, debit machine and/or credit card processing is a definite asset.

  • Develop an understanding of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.

  • Participate as an active and responsible team member.
  • Participate in mandatory orientation training.
  • Participate in regular supervision and performance appraisal process.
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner.
  • Must comply with all Salvation Army policies and procedures and associated legislation.
  • Ability to stand for long periods with frequent twisting, bending, crouching and reaching is required.
  • Ability to lift/move 40 pounds
  • Exhibit good listening skills, have strong oral/written communication skills and respect authority
  • Self-motivated/disciplined and able to work as part of a team
  • Represent The Salvation Army in a positive manner
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
