Description

The primary accountability for the Driver is to provide a service of pick-ups from donors to The Salvation Army Community & Family Services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

SERVICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administrative:

  • To complete all job-related duties in accordance with the standards, policies and procedures of The Salvation Army Hamilton Community & Family Services
  • As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Warehouse Supervisor
  • Provide support to community projects and events as requested by Community & Family Services Executive Director

Pick-ups/Deliveries:

  • Coordinate pick-up schedule with the Warehouse Supervisor
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling of deliveries, pick-ups, donations and funds while protecting property, including donations and vehicles
  • Provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service while building and maintaining positive relationships
  • Maintain knowledge of company policies and procedure, particularly Health & Safety
  • Load and unload goods at the warehouse and designated locations
  • Report any damaged goods on arrival at Ministry Unit
  • Assist with the receipt, recording (documentation), movement and storage of food and related products for the food bank operation

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Perform circle checks of vehicle and maintain vehicle logs according to The Salvation Army requirements before all trips
  • Take responsibility for daily and overall safety, general maintenance, operation of the vehicle, and complete appropriate records
  • Maintain cleanliness of program vehicle
  • Monitor and report any maintenance and repairs of vehicle promptly to supervisor

Health and Safety:

  • Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • Responsible to use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by the employer
  • Responsible to report workplace hazards and dangers
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment
  • Responsible to promptly report workplace injuries or illness

ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop an understanding of the mission of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
  • Maintain information in confidence as required
  • Participate as an active and responsible team member
  • Represent the organization in a professional and engaging manner
  • Participate in supervision and performance appraisal process
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures

  • Perform other position-related duties as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This is a temporary, part-time position based upon 15 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required, schedule may vary, some evening and weekend work may be required.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.  Normal work location is at 80 Bay St. N. Hamilton, ON and 150 King St. W. Dundas, ON and requires travel within surrounding areas.

Shifts: Monday, Wednesday and Friday @ 5 hours/day (15hrs/week), 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. includes a ½ hour unpaid lunch

Start Date:  May 30, 2022

End Date:  December 30, 2022

Operational hours of this facility are 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completed secondary school plus specialized courses (up to 6 months) in the relevant area
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Forklift certification or willingness and ability to be trained to operate a forklift
  • First aid/CPR and NVCI training or willingness to be trained
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of 1 year of related experience driving in a professional capacity (i.e. cube van, panel van).
  • Experience in shipping and materials handling is an asset

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Ability to operate pallet jack and other warehouse equipment
  • Good organizational, interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Punctual, self-motivated and disciplined
  • Be able to lift/move up to 50lbs and to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
