Reporting to the Recreation & Volunteer Services Coordinator, the Recreation Assistant provides recreation therapies to residents according to their assessed needs.  The Recreation Assistant works in collaboration with all other clinical care providers to optimize the residents’ experience. The Recreation Assistant is required to perform their duties consistent with the Salvation Army Meighen Health Centre’s core values, ensure resident safety, and demonstrate customer service excellence while responsible for planning, implementing and evaluating programs and services provided to the residents.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provides for recreation and leisure activities including outings in accordance with established policy, the resident plan of care and within the scope of practice
  • Contributes to and sustains a plan of care to meet residents’ assessed need
  • Assist in planning for assigned resident area activity calendars in accordance with the care plan goals and preferences of the residents
  • Responsible for maintaining accurate and complete records of care delivered
  • Responsible for maintaining recreation supplies and advising the manager when supplies need to be restocked
  • Follows all policies and procedures; contributes to the review and development of recreation therapy policies as indicated
  • Identifies appropriate therapeutic recreation goals and interventions on the care plans of identified residents and seeks direction from the Recreation and Volunteer Coordinator when resident need exceeds experience or scope of practice
  • Follows established job routines daily, including assisting with feeding residents
  • Participates in care conferences as required

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • There a 2 temporary full time positions. One is for approximately 8 weeks and the other is until March 31, 2024
  • Both positions work 75 hours biweekly
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
  • This role is in a senior’s congregate setting and may be subject to working in outbreak (COVID, flu, etc.) conditions
  • May work with residents who are physically and/or cognitively impaired
  • Interacts with families, staff, and volunteers

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduation from a recognized recreational or geriatric program
  • Certification in CPR/First Aid preferred
  • Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience
  • Knowledge of programming needs for older adults diagnosed with dementia

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Deals tactfully and courteously with residents, resident’s families, visitors and staff in a positive manner
  • Demonstrate a high level of integrity, sound judgment and ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Ability to follow direction and work in a team environment
  • Proficiency in interpersonal communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office - Word, Outlook, and Excel, internet use, and computerized documentation an asset
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
