Position Purpose Summary:

The Program Activity Assistant will ensure adequate support is given to department leaders. This summer job position will need to be flexible to work in multiple locations and departments as needed.



  • Answer telephone & direct or respond to calls promptly
  • Answer doors promptly when the doorbells ring
  • Remain up-to-date and proficient in use of all office equipment
  • Process all necessary paperwork and office related duties in a timely fashion to meet all deadline


  • Interview, assist, evaluate and implement plan of action with client and aid
  • Ensure clients are registered in Link2Feed and information is kept up to date
  • Document assistance and case notes on Link2Feed
  • Ensure that clients’ needs are met in compliance with Salvation Army policies and in cooperation with other agencies
  • Ensure food donations are organized to date and appropriate locations. Utilize FIFO food management
  • Food warehouse and Food Pantry organized and stocked neatly.
  • Ensure Food Bank, Pantry, Warehouse and any other area used are kept clean 


  • Help prepare nutritious menu and serve food for all feeding programs in accordance with applicable food, health, and safety regulations
  • Maintain a high level of cleanliness at all times within the kitchen and storage areas. Take out recycling and garbage as needed
  • Assist with community gardens (plant, care, maintain, weed, clean, and harvest crops)


  • Greet customers and donors in a friendly manner and provide good customer service
  • Treat co-workers, customers, donors, and volunteers with respect and dignity
  • Put new merchandise on the sales floor in the designated areas
  • Assist with opening and closing the store when required
  • Recycle old merchandise and store in proper area
  • Unload the donation bin from in the store to the backroom. Place items in proper areas and maximize space
  • Cashier duties when required ensuring transactions are accurate and all merchandise is rung in the cash register as per cash register policies
  • Assist in keeping the store tidy, clean, organized and stocked of merchandise
  • Sort Donations; separate good reusable donations from recycling and garbage (see recycle guidelines)
  • Prepare merchandise for sale according to proper procedures (clothing, shoes, accessories etc.)
  • Pricing merchandise according to quality and value using store guidelines
  • Help load the recycle truck
  • Help customers load large items if needed
  • Place the garbage in the Dump Bin in a manner that maximizes space
  • Pack garbage properly in bags and break down recycle cardboard boxes, place broken glass in barrels, recycle metal in metal barrel and needles and drugs in biohazard containers
  • Inform Management or supervisor of any customer concerns
  • Keep your work area tidy, clean, organized and stocked with supplies daily
  • Housekeeping duties within all areas of store as required (washrooms, Kitchen, mopping, shoveling etc.)
  • Follow all The Salvation Army & Thrift Stores policies and procedures and The Health & Safety Act & Regulations
  • Know the Fire Evacuation plan, locations of Fire extinguishers and first aid stations
  • Report any infractions of Policies & Procedures to the Manager
  • Report any Health & Safety infractions, issues or concerns to management and worker rep.
  • Wear proper dress attire and PPE as required


  • Help to keep fire exits clear and assist in the “Tidy Maintenance” of the building
  • Perform other duties as required and assigned


  • The successful candidate must meet the requirements under the Canada Summer Jobs Program
    • Between 15 – 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Pleasant and courteous manner
  • Proficient computer skills including MS Office, Excel, CMS, SAMIS, Data Base Management, etc.
  • Proficient typing skills in order to take input clients information into the CMS computer system in a timely manor
  • Food Handler Certificate or willingness to obtain one upon hiring
  • Must be a team player
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • Must be able to affirm and support the mission and values of The Salvation Army
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to lift 30lbs repeatedly

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

HOURS:  37.5 hours per week. Monday to Friday 10:00am -6:00pm, some weekends as needed
