Description

The Assistant Day Camp Coordinator will assist in all various areas and will complete varied tasks providing support to department leaders. Within the context and mission of the Salvation Army Oshawa Temple, work cooperatively with the Day Camp Coordinators and Head counselor/Behavior support in all aspects of the summer day camp program.  This Day Camp seeks to provide excellent children’s programming, including families that would otherwise be unable to afford a summer day camp experience for their children.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Implement the day-to-day operations of the program. This includes (but is not limited to) recreational games, crafts, Bible lessons, and other scheduled events
  • Supervise, interact with and support all Day Camp campers
  • Work cooperatively with the Day Camp and assistant Coordinator, head counselor/behavior support person, church staff and volunteers in all aspects of the program.
  • Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information (including new COVID-19 Policies and Procedures
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned (set up, clean up, communication)

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Develop and document business requirements, process and reports as needed
  • Develop and document options and recommendations to issues and problems
  • Support key stakeholders in understanding the implications of options and decisions

Reporting

  • Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes
  • Support external reporting requests as needed

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary position based on 37.5 hours per week
  • Be available for full 8 weeks of program
  • Oshawa Temple Church grounds (Both indoor and outdoor work environment)
  • This job requires the ability to lift/move 25 lbs. and reach, bend, stand, sit, and use a computer
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required
  • 20% travel requirements approximately

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible.  Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR is an asset but not required

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • At least 1 year of experience in leadership in a camp setting
  • Have own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online

SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES:

  • Must have excellent written, verbal and computer skills (this includes but not limited to video editing)
  • Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Self-motivated and disciplined
  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics
  • Organized, hardworking, dedicated, creative, and possess leadership qualities
  • Able to work well independently and as in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
