Description

Within the context and mission of the Salvation Army Oshawa Temple, give direction to and oversee all aspects of the summer day camp program with regards to children who require extra behavioral support. This position will allow the camp to include children who may not be accepted in other camps due to their higher needs. This Day Camp seeks to provide excellent children’s programming, including families that would otherwise be unable to afford a summer day camp experience for their children.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work directly with Day Camp staff to support campers who require extra behavioral support. This includes providing strategies for camp staff to use and teaching on the protocols/procedures on behavioral supports.
  • Help lead children and youth to respond to the gospel through presentation and prayer.
  • Participate in the Summer Day Camp mentoring program for Day Camp staff and campers.
  • Attend all online staff training/orientation and meetings
  • Work cooperatively with the Day Camp and assistant Coordinators, church staff and volunteers in all aspects of the program.
  • Know and act in accordance with policies and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information (including new COVID-19 Policies and Procedures
  • Perform other relevant duties as assigned (set up, clean up, communication).

Written and Verbal Communication

  • Develop and document business requirements, process and reports as needed
  • Develop and document options and recommendations to issues and problems
  • Support key stakeholders in understanding the implications of options and decisions

Reporting

  • Create and maintain list of reports required for health and safety compliance purposes
  • Support external reporting requests as needed

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • This is a temporary position based on 35 hours per week
  • Be available for full 8 weeks of program
  • Oshawa Temple Church grounds (Both indoor and outdoor work environment)
  • Physically and emotionally demanding workday
  • 20% travel requirements approximately

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
    • Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
    • Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
    • Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
    • *International students are not eligible.  Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
  • Completed a minimum of one (1) year of Secondary School
  • Standard First Aid and CPR an asset

EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Experience with supporting children and their behavioural needs
  • Experience with encouraging and assisting others in supporting children and their behavioural needs
  • Have own computer with reliable internet connection, as file access and meetings may take place online

  • Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics and a balanced sense of fairness and flexibility
  • Able to problem solve on the spot, be resilient, adaptable and flexible
  • Ability to take a leadership role and communicate in a group setting
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively, patiently and effectively
  • Ability to help support other leaders with children’s individual behavioural needs
  • The ability to Implement behavior supports during the day-to-day operations of programs
  • A desire to be creative and innovative showing initiative with limited supervision
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities
