This is a temporary, casual relief position with no guaranteed hours.  The work schedule is determined by the direct supervisor based on the needs and requirements of the program.  Standard shelter worker shifts are 7:30 pm to 2:00 am, 9:30 pm to 8:30 am and 2:00 am to 8:30 am. Casual Relief workers will cover evening, weekend and overnight shifts when required and include a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable.

Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army Suncoast Citadel 303 Suncoast Dr. E. Goderich, ON N7A 4H8

Responsibilities

  • Complete intake, orientation and discharge of shelter guests and associated paperwork
  • Perform administrative duties, such as compiling and maintaining accurate case files and appropriate documentation related to guests and initiate any new documentation; complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army
  • Conduct all required shift change procedures prior to and after shift change
  • Maintain confidentiality of all client records, complete paperwork, and update daily communication log and guest files regularly.
  • Monitor appropriate behaviour; intervene in crisis situations, provide emotional support and advocacy as required
  • Encourage shelter guests in the maintenance of good personal hygiene, housekeeping, and general life skills.
  • Ensure that all shelter guests and volunteers are informed and adhere to the shelter rules and expectations.
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary.
  • Notify supervisor of needed supplies or repairs.
  • Model and actively promote a positive environment at the shelter ensuring that all individuals are treated with courtesy, respect and dignity at all times.
  • Engage outside professionals or agencies who may be able to provide assistance, advocate on client's behalf with external parties
  • Provide support to and work with volunteers
  • Prepare light meals and snacks for guests in accordance with Safe Food Handling procedures.
  • Perform daily and weekly cleaning tasks for various shelter program spaces.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of more than two (2) years of Community College
  • Post-Secondary Education or equivalent with a background in Social Work, i.e. Social Services or Human Services Diploma
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience, including front-line casework experience in a social services environment
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of the challenges and impact to persons who are experiencing homelessness, living in poverty, and other various social issues
  • Knowledge and sound understanding of local resources for Mental Health and Addictions services, housing, income support and other support systems in the county of Huron
  • Ability to work with sensitivity and compassion, demonstrate a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental approach to shelter guests
  • Strong-oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and disciplined
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Ability to lift/move 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, including individuals who are marginalized
  • Must have strong skills and experience using Microsoft Office, i.e. WORD and EXCEL
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR, Safe Food Handling and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance, a copy of current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
