Position Purpose summary:

The Shelter Worker is responsible for the care and safety of the guests staying at Richmond House Emergency shelter.


  • Monitors the activities of the guests; may include providing safe storage and recording of prescribed medications, doing in-take interview, complete paperwork and orientation of new guests, ensures ongoing enforcement of policies, which may include enforcing restrictions.
  • Carry out inspection/security checks of property and grounds in accordance with policies and procedures
  • Accurately records day-to-day happenings using appropriate methods; maintains logbooks and completes occurrence reports
  • Responsible for the care and safety of guests in the Shelter, as well as the premises itself, including doing bed checks, room/personal searches. Establish clear, simple, and consistent limits for the guests. Encourage and facilitate the participation of guests to create a safe, positive atmosphere.
  • Work with Case Workers to assist guests in working through their case plans, providing personal, practical, and moral support to guests and feedback to Case Workers
  • Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. welfare, police, parole, urgent situations.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and order of the shelter while on duty.
  • May serve as Receptionist for Shelter



  • Post-secondary education in Social Services or a related field, or combination of education and experience.
  • First aid certificate and CPR
  • Training in the Vulnerability Assessment Tool (VAT), Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training, and Mental Health First Aid training would be an asset


  • Minimum two years of previous experience working with the homeless and/or vulnerable people

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Must have a good working knowledge of homelessness, mental health, and addiction issues
  • Intermediate computer skills be a problem-solver, able to work independently while still part of a team and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to identify sensitive issues and maintain confidentiality.
  • Must be sensitive to and respectful of cultural and gender diversity

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
