This is a temporary, full-time position based upon 40 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Flexibility in scheduling is necessary in order to meet program requirements. The direct supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule based on needs. Schedule may vary according to requirements of responsibilities. Normal work schedule may include evenings, weekends and overnight shifts as required and includes a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable.

End Date: April 4, 2020

Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army Suncoast Citadel 303 Suncoast Dr. E. Goderich, ON N7A 4H8

Responsibilities

  • Prepare for and give oversight to the Huron Out of the Cold Shelter program, ensuring programs objectives are consistently accomplished
  • Provide intake services, client assessments, orientation, and emergency assistance; discharge process of shelter guests.
  • Provide direction, support and team leadership to program staff/volunteers to ensure that they work together to achieve the purpose of the program.
  • Ensure that all shelter guests, staff, and volunteers are informed and adhere to the shelter rules and expectations.
  • Model and actively promote a positive environment at the shelter ensuring that all individuals are treated with courtesy, respect and dignity at all times.
  • Ensure that volunteers and staff receive appropriate training, i.e. Health and Safety and job specific where applicable and complete the daily communication log.
  • Participate in the hiring, orientating, training and evaluating of staff and volunteers as necessary.
  • Ensure that all required supplies are available onsite as required for the daily operation of the shelter i.e. bedding, food supplies, cleaning supplies etc.
  • Responsible for preparing and submitting reports, proposals, statistics, expenditures, program evaluations as requested by internal or external sources; maintains confidentiality of all shelter guests and volunteer and staff records and statistical data.
  • During shift, provide support and supervision of staff/volunteers concerning crisis intervention, anger management as required to ensure the safety of staff/volunteers.
  • In consultation with the Community and Family Services Manager develops an operating budget for the shelter program and monitors/manages financial performance of the program accordingly.
  • Work with the Community and Family Services Manager to ensure that programs meet contractual, legal and internal requirements.
  • Network with Salvation Army, government and community service social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of shelter guests and programs
  • Follow up on shelter guest complaints as identified on behalf of staff, Community and Family Services Manager or Corps Officers
  • Assist in the development of operational policies and procedures in accordance with the Salvation Army and all relevant funding partners.
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervenes when necessary.
  • Perform other position related duties as requested by the Corps Officer or their designate.

Qualifications

  • Completed an Undergraduate University Degree i.e. Social Sciences or equivalent
  • Minimum of two(2) years of prior related experience , including, experience in a specialized social services program, inclusive of supervisory experience
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and conflict resolution skills
  • Essential skills: critical thinking, decision making, problem solving and administrative
  • Knowledge and understanding of the challenges and impact to persons who are experiencing homelessness, living in poverty, and other various social issues
  • Knowledge and sound understanding of local resources for Mental Health and Addictions services, housing, income support and other support systems in the county of Huron
  • Ability to work with sensitivity and compassion, demonstrate a supportive, respectful and non-judgmental approach to shelter guests
  • Ability to lead, coach, and motivate
  • Ability to lift/move 25 lbs.
  • Ability to work with a diverse population, including individuals who are marginalized
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Must have strong skills and experience using Microsoft Office, i.e. WORD and EXCEL
  • Strong leadership skills with the ability to develop and achieve program goals and objectives
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of the management team.
  • Strong networking skills and the ability to develop healthy partnerships with new and existing groups and organizations within the county of Huron
  • May represent the program through public speaking engagements as directed
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR, Safe Food Handling and Non-Violent Crisis Intervention
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance, a copy of current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army.
