Description

The Shelter Outreach Worker reports to the Shelter Casework Manager and works in accordance with the mission and philosophy of the Salvation Army Harbour Light. The Shelter Outreach Worker will be responsible for building relationships with clients or potential clients of the Harbour Light Emergency Shelters and, in conjunction with Case Workers, assessing client needs and providing on-going client support, advocacy and follow-up. The Shelter Outreach Worker will assist in the development and delivery of educational, social and recreational activities for shelter clients and the Anchor Drop-In Centre and will encourage and support clients in making positive lifestyle changes, developing new skills, and participating in healthy activities.

Hours: 

  • Saturday – Wednesday, 2pm-10pm

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Building relationships with clients, and motivating and supporting them in making healthy lifestyle choices
  • Assessing Drop-In client needs, and formulating and supporting individual client plans for improved quality of life
  • In conjunction with Caseworkers, supporting individual plans of Shelter clients to ensure effectiveness, which may include accompanying clients to appointments to establish and maintain good interpersonal and professional relationships
  • Monitoring progress towards goals and objectives and facilitating attainment of same through motivating, mentoring and modeling
  • Orientation of Shelter clients with shelter resources and follow-up referral to Caseworkers
  • Encouraging clients to participate in social and/or recreational activities both at Harbour Light and by introducing them to outside resources
  • Acting as liaison with staff of other Harbour Light programs, including Detox, Stabilization and Treatment
  • Providing effective communication with shelter staff and partner agencies, follow-up support and client tracking
  • Assisting in the daily operation and maintenance of the Anchor Drop-In Centre
  • Assisting with orientation of volunteers at the Anchor Drop-In Centre and providing backup support to them.
  • Maintaining client confidentiality and keeping accurate client files and statistical records
  • Networking with government and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients
  • Assisting with the development and delivery of programs or workshops designed to help clients move forward in their lives
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to adhere to the Mission and Values of The Salvation Army
  • Must demonstrate a positive attitude towards the homeless and individuals with substance abuse and concurrent problems, including mental health concerns.
  • Demonstrates good verbal and written communication skills, effective listening skills, and organizational skills.
  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an Emergency Shelter in an inner-city environment, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
  • Beginner to intermediate computer skills.
  • First Aid and CPR certificate preferred.

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Post-secondary education in a related field would be considered an asset.

Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
