This is a permanent, part-time position based on 16 hours every other week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break. The operational hours of this facility are 24 hours a day.

Shifts:   Friday 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m.; Saturday 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., This position is working every other weekend.  Some flexibility in scheduling may be required.

Start Date:  February 3, 2020

  • Assume shift coordinator tasks including; dispensing medication, completing safety checks, logbook recordings.
  • Ensure participant safety throughout the night including half-hourly room checks completed and documented.
  • Complete meal/ snack preparation for the following day as outlined on the approved menu.
  • Primary responsibility for house maintenance duties as outlined under ‘shift responsibilities’ as well as the organization and maintenance of property and program supplies.
  • Responsible to ensure that needs of program participants are met i.e. physically, emotionally, medically, and behaviorally.
  • Report any identified needs to team members, Respite Program Supervisor and/or On –Call designate and parent/usual caregiver.
  • Advocate on the behalf of the program participants to promote health and well-being.
  • Ensure that participants follow through on personal care routines.
  • Provide support and direction to relief staff.
  • Provide intervention for any behavioral challenges.
  • Maintenance and updating of participant records and other program documentation.
  • Dispense medication and ensure that all medication charting is completed in compliance with established agency policies.
  • Ensure proper recording in the daily log, shift change book, anecdotal recordings, incident reports, restraint forms, etc.
  • Report any property damage, mechanical breakdown of equipment and/or repairs needed in the program.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.


  • Ability to lift/move up to 50 lbs.
  • Frequent lifting, twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, pushing and pulling.
  • Walking and standing for long periods.
  • Some kneeling, running may be required.


  • Completed two (2) years of Community College in related education (Developmental Service Worker diploma, Child and Youth Worker diploma or equivalent) in the area of developmental disabilities.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous work experience in a social services setting providing direct care to children, youth and adults who have intellectual disabilities; dealing with crises.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification.
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training.
  • Safe Food Handling Certification is required.
  • Proficiency in the use of computer programs such as Word processing, Spreadsheets, Databases, E-mail and Internet.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license is preferred.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry is required.
  • Fluent French verbal and written communication skills an asset.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
