Position Purpose Summary:

The Program Supervisor assists the Gemma House Program Director in the development and supervision of the Gemma House program.  The Program Supervisor administers case management for the youth and ensures needs of residents are met.  In addition, the Program Supervisor monitors, trains, and supports youth care workers.

This is a permanent full-time position at 40 hours per week.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Gemma House Program:
  • The Program Supervisor supervises the development and delivery of programs in Gemma House
  • The Program Supervisor assumes responsibility of the Ministry Unit in the absence of the Program Director.
  • To ensure the environment and programming is supportive and nurturing and includes a high degree of youth worker and resident involvement and decision-making
  • Ensures implementation and oversight of policies and procedures and ensures they are understood and adhered to by employees
  • Maintains records on outcomes and completes a yearly report
  • Supports the growth and development of the program
  • Maintains and promotes a positive public image of the Salvation Army Gemma House by providing a high caliber of services and by dealing with the public and professional contacts in a courteous and professional manner
  • Is part of the on-call rotation
  • Participates in bi-weekly Team Meetings
  • Participates in all bi-weekly Leadership Meetings
  • Participates in community and Salvation Army forums as requested by Program Director
  1. Casework Accountabilities and Client Support:
  • Provide case management services for the residents of Gemma House
  • Reviews referrals from Ministry of Social Services (MSS) with Program Director or designate and ensures all necessary information is available to make admission decisions
  • Decisions on referrals to be made within two business days when referral information is complete.
  • Completes pre-admission house tours and provides information to potential residents and their workers, provides handbook, basic tour of main living areas
  • Completes discharge processes when residents are discharged from the program, ensures resident’s belongings are packed,
  • Builds and maintains a therapeutic milieu with youth workers and residents
  • Ensures the physical and psychological needs of residents are being met through programming, individual counselling, etc.
  • Establishes treatment directions for residents in consultation with the Program Director and the youth’s MSS worker
  • Chairs monthly (or as needed) planning meetings for residents, workers, and family
  • Arranges passes for residents
  • Maintains regular contact with parents, guardians, caregivers, teachers, and school officials and those directly involved in the resident’s day to day well-being
  • Makes, organizes and/or attends and documents resident appointments (medical, counselling, etc.)
  • Plans and organizes extra-curricular activities in conjunction with youth and as approved by MSS worker
  • Utilizes Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) techniques for youth in crisis
  • Completes reports and maintains records and for current and discharged youth and ensures staff reports meet program and MSS standards
  • Completes yearly reports on program outcomes
  • Is responsible for the safe keeping of resident clothing funds and ensures residents have clothing needs met
  • Provides statistical and evaluative information to management and funders
  • To support and encourage graduates of the program in their transition
  • To support the efforts made to meet the residents’ spiritual needs and cultural practice
  1. Human Resources:
  • Oversight of the Gemma House mentoring of staff.
  • To engage in regular supervision with the Program Director
  • Ensures implementation and oversight of policies and procedures and ensures they are understood and adhered to by employees
  • May participate in hiring, orientating, training, coaching, evaluating, and scheduling of staff in accordance with contracts and residential standards
  • Assist with staff time sheets and ensures they are submitted for payroll purposes
  • Monitors and assist with staff safety practices in compliance with health and safety standards and prepares, submits, and acts on incident reports; identifies proactive safety measures to the Program Director based on needs and concerns
  • Provides TCI training at regular intervals and provides ongoing coaching of staff in the use of TCI practices and procedures
  • Assumes the role of a front-line youth worker as needed
  • To be responsible for own professional self-development
  1. Administration, Documentation & Reporting:
  • Assist with statistical reports (including SAMIS) and other documents for Administration
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, legible, and current client file records.
  • To assist in ensuring program vehicles are maintained and in safe working order
  • Provides back up support for reception (answers phones, doors, etc. as needed)
  • Record unusual or out of character behaviours noticed in daily logbooks and report them to appropriate partners
  • Maintain monthly fiscal logs for bus passes, petty cash, and gift cards

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

*NOTE: You may be required to provide validated educational documentation.

Education/Certifications:

  • Completed a post-secondary University Degree in social work or equivalent education
  • Current Driver’s licence and driving abstract
  • CPR First Aid (C)
  • TCI (Therapeutic Crisis Intervention) - training will be provided if necessary
  • Ability to become a TCI trainer
  • ASIST
  • Food Safe

Experience:

  • Minimum of three to five (3-5) years of prior related experience in a residential setting working with marginalized clientele.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience in supervision, leadership, coaching, and motivating staff in a residential setting.
  • Experience working with youth/women’s programs is preferred
  • Demonstrated understanding of the Behavior Based Model
  • Experience in a case management system

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, be reliable and operate in an environment of accountability.
  • Demonstrates experience with Microsoft Office, internet, and keyboarding
  • Understands the dynamics of resident’s behaviour with the ability to assess their needs and risks
  • Ability to demonstrate understanding of and empathy toward cultural differences
  • Has skill in understanding the use of authority in supervision and effective intervention in crisis situations.

  • This position requires the successful candidate to have a valid driver's license and an acceptable drivers abstract. The successful candidate would have to provide proof upon being hired.

Work setting is at Gemma House which is a Residential group home with shift work required.

Be willing to work extra time occasionally when required to support programming requirements within the Ministry Unit.
