This is a permanent, part-time position based on 16 to 20 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. There will be a seasonal temporary increase in hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a  period of time during the months of November and December including a ½ hour unpaid meal break as required.  The supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule as per operational requirements. Normal hours of work: Monday to Friday 8:30 am to 4:30 pm including a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable.  Some weekend and evening work may be required.

Normal location of work:

  • Suncoast Citadel Community and Family Services, 309 Suncoast Drive, Goderich ON
  • Clinton Community and Family Services 32 Albert Street, Clinton ON

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client.
  • Provide emergency assistance services, i.e. food, clothing, household needs in accordance with policy
  • Organize, plan and deliver seasonal and special programs as required, i.e. Christmas Hamper, Christmas Kettles, Food Drive, etc.; ensure that ministry objectives are accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all programs.
  • Pickup bread from local grocery stores as needed.
  • May develop and conduct workshops for families/clients as appropriate.
  • Assist with activities of the Food Bank, organize, ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, ensure sufficient stock, sort and process donated goods, process clients through the food bank.
  • Ensure that Ministry Unit policy and procedure are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e. furniture and clothing vouchers.
  • May assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for volunteer development
  • May demonstrate work methods to volunteers.
  • Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality and providing statistical reports.
  • Provide input into the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Community and Family Services programs.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Service Worker or counselling or equivalent
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues a variety of social service programs.
  • Self-motivated and disciplined.
  • Knowledge of community based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Safe Food Handlers Certification
  • Be able to lift/move up to 40 pounds
  • Current First Aid & CPR Certification
  • Must have strong skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL)
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, own vehicle, insurance and a current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Provide an original copy of a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
