This is a casual relief position with no guaranteed hours.  Flexibility in scheduling is required.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.  The operational hours of this facility are 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday with occasional evening and weekend work.

Responsibilities

The Program Services Worker – Intermediate assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army.  This position also provides support to the Food Bank Program and other programs provided by the Community and Family services.

  • Conduct initial intake assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client.
  • Provide emergency assistance services, i.e. food, clothing, household needs in accordance with policy
  • Organize, plan and deliver seasonal and special programs as required, i.e. Christmas Hamper, Christmas Kettles, Food Drive, etc.; ensure that ministry objectives are accomplished and that a spiritual focus is applied to all programs.
  • Pickup bread from local grocery stores as needed.
  • May develop and conduct workshops for families/clients as appropriate.
  • Assist with activities of the Food Bank, organize, ensure that the food bank is tidy and clean, ensure sufficient stock, sort and process donated goods, process clients through the food bank.
  • Ensure that Ministry Unit policy and procedure are followed for the safe/secure handling of all monetary donations received and appropriate documentation of gift cards and various vouchers is maintained, i.e. furniture and clothing vouchers.
  • May assist in the development of strategies and recommendations for volunteer development
  • May demonstrate work methods to volunteers.
  • Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of client information on The Salvation Army’s computer system while maintaining confidentiality and providing statistical reports.
  • Provide input into the development and implementation of policies and procedures for Community and Family Services programs.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Community College Diploma, Social Service Worker, counselling or equivalent in a related field of study.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including experience working with multi-barriered persons, individuals with mental health issues a variety of social service programs.
  • Knowledge of community based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.
  • First Aid & CPR Certification and Safe Food Handlers Certification.
  • Ability to lift/move up to 40 pounds.
  • Must have strong skills and experience using word processing (WORD); spread sheet use (EXCEL).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills - clear and simple to understand. Exhibit good listening skills and respect authority.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills – self-motivated and disciplined self-starter.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Ability to work in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, own vehicle and insurance, provide an original copy of current driver’s abstract that it satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required .
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Provide an original copy of a Criminal Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
