This is a temporary, part-time contract position based upon 20 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.

Normal hours of operation are Wednesday and Thursday from 08:00 a.m. to 03:00 p.m. and Friday  from  08:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army St. Catharines Booth Centre, 184 Church Street, St. Catharines, Ontario L2R 3E7.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement case management of assigned clients; assist clients in establishing goals, monitor progress, and prepare discharge plan.
  • Perform administrative duties, such as compiling and maintaining accurate case files and appropriate documentation related to clients and initiates and any new documentation; complete all reports required by the funder and The Salvation Army including HIFIS.
  • Facilitate the delivery of program, one-on-one and/or groups.
  • Maintain caseload with regularly scheduled sessions and record keeping on all contacts and sessions as required by policy and procedures.
  • Perform intake assessments to gather information and identify problems; formulate treatment plans to help clients meet their needs; perform discharge procedures for clients as assigned.
  • Monitor appropriate behavior; intervene in crisis situations, provide emotional support and advocacy as required.
  • Complete program evaluations and respond accordingly to adapt and improve program content, and from time to time update the Program Manual.
  • Ensure appropriate communication of relevant concerns being mindful of the guidelines of the referral base and confidentiality procedures: maintain confidentiality of all client records, documenting all relevant information and update logs and client files regularly.
  • Encourage clients in the maintenance of good personal hygiene, housekeeping and general life skills.
  • Discuss with clients concerns as reported in unit inspections. Work cooperatively with the superintendents at our various shelter locations and complete necessary documentation as required.
  • Enforce program rules and expectations on a consistent basis with clients.
  • Work collaboratively with community partners to extend emergency support to clients placed in area motels.
  • Ensure full compliance with child protection legislation and intervene when necessary
  • Network with Salvation Army, government and community service social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and programs.
  • Engage in the development of inter-personal relationships that promote dignity and respect
  • Perform required scheduled check-ins of clients, unit visits and inspections
  • May liaise with Police, funders, court personnel, community agencies, families, and other staff members.
  • Coordinate care services, help clients identify and obtain resources.
  • Engage outside professionals or agencies that may be able to provide assistance, advocate on client’s behalf with external parties.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of more than two (2) years of Community College
  • Post-Secondary Education or equivalent with a background in Social Work, ie. Social Services or Human Services Diploma preferred
  • A minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including front-line casework experience in a social services environment
  • Solid background of how to work with people from diverse backgrounds and enjoy assisting others to solve problems
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self -motivated and disciplined
  • Knowledge of issues facing persons experiencing housing crisis
  • Knowledge and sound understanding of the Mental Health and Addictions support systems available to individuals in the Niagara region
  • Knowledge of various social issues pertaining to homelessness and its impact on the clients served
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Strong networking ability to develop healthy partnerships with new and existing groups and organizations within the Niagara region
  • Certified in First Aid/CPR and Non-Violent Crisis intervention
  • Strong computer skills including a working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license and current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Center (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • Be able to obtain Canada Corrections clearance through the Enhanced Reliability Screening process
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada
  • Note: Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered
