The Planned Giving Representative is responsible for playing a leadership role in the lead generation, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned gifts for The Salvation Army.  This position draws upon a high level of charitable gift planning expertise in working with a portfolio of individual donors and prospects to secure revocable and irrevocable planned gifts.

This is a full-time position, with regular working hours Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Strategy & Planning:

  • Working with the divisional and territorial PRD teams, implement a comprehensive plan for marketing planned giving in the division
  • Develop and implement a moves management strategy that includes face to face meetings, events and purposeful interactions to engage each donor and prospect in the mission of The Salvation Army and build their financial support through planned gifts
  • Develop customized strategies for the continued growth to the organization of specific bequests, gifts of insurance, annuities, endowed gifts and other planned gifts
  • Plan and execute stewardship strategies for confirmed legacy donors

Planned Giving and Moves Management:

  • Be current on planned giving trends, tax implications of planned gifts and legislation
  • Research, identify and qualify planned giving prospects
  • Organize and help conduct presentations for prospective donors, professional financial and estate planners, church congregations, and other constituencies
  • Write articles on planned giving opportunities and donor stories for various publications
  • Working with a pipeline of donors and prospects, cultivate, solicit and steward planned gifts
  • Promote the Planned Giving program, both internally and externally, through various media (direct mail, newsletter, focused advertising) as approved by the Divisional Director of Development or Divisional Secretary for Public Relations
  • Inform Officers and Lay leaders on the Planned Giving program

Administration and Support:

  • Maintain active prospect management system in Raiser’s Edge NXT
  • Coordinate with other staff on gift accounting, gift acknowledgement, accurate record keeping and stewardship initiatives
  • Ensure that all donor interaction and outcomes are recorded in the database
  • Ensure that the database, Raiser’s Edge, is properly maintained so that prospects, confirmed Gift in Will donors, other planned giving donors, and allied professionals are identified and that all communications with these individuals are recorded

Relationship Management:

  • Cultivate relationships with lawyers, accountants, trust officers, life underwriters, financial planners and other professionals to make them aware of, and keep them up to date on The Salvation Army and opportunities for funding by their clients
  • Extend appreciation for donors’ continued support by organizing donor recognition events and promoting Salvation Army activities to donor prospects


  • Reports directly to the Divisional Director of Development
  • This role has no managerial or supervisory responsibility but has prospect and donor relationship management duties; accountable for promoting, developing, and maintaining planned gift donations with donors and prospects


  • This role is granted a corporate credit card and has an accountability for the wise usage and reporting of expenses made within the budget allotted
  • The overall finance responsibility and approval lie with the Divisional Director of Development


  • Working environment is typically in the office and occasional travel to donor meetings
  • Donor meetings and events may require work outside of regular office hours
  • This role is provided with a cell phone


Education, Qualifications and Certifications:  

  • Completion of a formal post-secondary/college/university degree program of 3 academic years with exposure to finance, annuities, tax laws, and/or accounting being an asset and experience in Planned Giving fundraising or related experience
  • CFRE designation and/or membership in a professional association are considered assets
  • A combination of equivalent education and experience will be considered

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:  

  • Demonstrated ability to successfully plan, organize and manage a relationship-based program
  • Hands on experience with data entry. Experience working with a donor database management system (specifically Raisers Edge) is an asset
  • Knowledge and understanding of estate planning, including wills, trusts, annuities, and estate and gift tax laws

Skills and Capabilities:

  • Ability to work effectively with a variety of internal and external contacts including staff, volunteers and donors
  • Experience and ability to work effectively in a team, a team player with sound judgment and the ability to handle matters of a sensitive and confidential nature.
  • A strategic mindset with superior listening skills and the ability to interpret the concerns and interests of corporations
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at once from conception to completion with tightly prescribed timelines
  • Demonstrated commitment to ongoing learning and professional development to stay informed about fundraising initiatives and the organization’s missions and objectives
  • Demonstrated ability to facilitate the completion of a variety of gifts (bequests, life insurance, annuities, endowed gifts and other planned gifts etc.)
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills with an emphasis on proposal development and presentation to internal and external contacts
  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative and leverage innovative approaches to prepare and present donor-centered material and proposals
  • Proven research, analytical, decision making, and problem-solving abilities
  • Appreciation and understanding of Imagine Canada’s Standards Program, AFP Code of Ethics, Policies and Procedure
  • Ability to establish and build healthy working relationships and partnerships with clients, peers and external stakeholders
  • Ability to support, advance, and protect the mission, goals and values of the organization
  • Must be highly motivated and able to research new prospects and emerging market trends for best practices and potential new strategies applicable to the organization
  • Highly self-motivated and directed
  • Highly adaptable individual with a strong intellectual curiosity to help build better relationships with donors and prospects
