Position Purpose Summary:

This position will be required to ensure that our building is kept clean, sanitized and safe for all staff, volunteers and people that enter our building. The exterior of the building will need to be kept clean and safe at all times as well



Cleaning, Equipment Use and Garbage

  • Ensures the general cleanliness of the building interior including but not limited to mopping, stripping and waxing floors, and vacuuming, cleaning and sanitizing other interior surfaces such as accessible walls and interior windows, dusting, polishing and cleaning furniture and cleaning and sanitizing washrooms
  • Sweep, and mop all floors and stairwells daily
  • Clean and sanitize all bathrooms daily
  • Maintains the security and organization of custodian room contents. Ensure equipment needed for the job is kept clean all the time (i.e. mops and mop buckets, brooms, dusters, clothes)
  • Sanitize all highly touched surfaces daily (e.g. elevator buttons, door handles, railing, phones daily
  • Strip and wax floors once a year
  • Restocks washroom supplies and distributes received material as required
  • Monitors and maintains stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, lights, paper towel, hand sanitizer, soap, etc. and give list to Administrative Assistant to reorder as needed.
  • Collects and disposes of all garbage (dumpster and recyclables)
  • Coordinates cleaning schedule/needs with weekly and special activities
  • Collects donated clothing/articles and rubbish left outside the building and ensures proper disposal/disposition
  • Checks doors to ensure building security
  • Ensures the general upkeep of the external property such as mowing lawns, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks.
  • May be asked to help with local pickups for various program needs
  • Inform Director of any required repairs or maintenance needed on the building
  • Ability to perform minor building repairs and maintenance as required (e.g. Carpentry, dry wall patching, painting, minor plumbing, changing ceiling tiles, and light bulbs)
  • The incumbent is required to lift more than 30 pounds.
  • Other duties as assigned



  • Completion of High School
  • Must have some knowledge and experience in janitorial work
  • Able to work at a fast pace
  • Able to work cooperatively in a team setting
  • Possess good organizational skills
  • Understand and work in accordance with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army
  • Comfortable working in a Christian environment and able to demonstrate empathy and compassion
  • Complete all trainings as required
  • A valid Driver’s License

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

HOURS: 30 hours per week. 7:30am to 10:30am, Monday to Friday, flexibility is essential, possibly some weekends
