The Residential Over Night Support worker assists in ensuring a healthy and safe environment for members by providing an overnight and morning presence and assistance. The incumbent may provide emotional support and crisis intervention.

This is a casual on call position with variable hours.


  • Supervision: Responsible for his/her own time and effort only. He/She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students.


  • Records Management: Responsible for the completion and secure storage of records and documentation in accordance with agency policies and procedures, Residential Care Licensing and the Manitoba Family Services and Housing requirements. Record and report activities, behaviours, and any incidents which occur during the overnight shift. Responsible for the review and completion of the Staff Communication Book at the beginning and end of each shift.


  • Safety: Ensure that residents and staff live and work in a safe environment. Comply with all safety rules and regulations including working alone and ensure that all food and equipment are properly stored, maintained and safely used. Maintain safe storage and recording of medication. Answer door and telephone during shift using proper precautions. Provide crisis intervention for residents as required. Conduct nightly checks of the grounds, facility and residents’ beds at start and end of shift and regular checks to ensure that working partner is okay. Ensure residents’ policy compliance throughout the shift. Report concerns promptly to on call person as needed. Ensure proper lifting, twisting and reaching techniques are used during job performance.


  • Health and Medical: Attend to any health and medical needs in a timely fashion and ensure that medication is properly administered. Recognize and report concerns of abuse or neglect. Provide emotional support for residents as required.


  • Meals: Ensure breakfast is prepared and provided in accordance with Canada’s Food Guide and adapted to individual likes, preferences, choices and medical requirements.


  • Property Management: Ensure facility is kept in accordance with agency policies and procedures, Residential Care Licensing and the Manitoba Family Services and Housing requirements. Perform necessary housekeeping duties and report any maintenance issues as they arise.


  • Person Centered Plans: Be involved in individual plans. Communicate necessary information, observations and concerns with other staff in Staff Communication Book.


  • Individual Personal Development: Encourage and assist each individual to participate in morning routines and preparation for work/program.


  • Public Relations and Communication: Ensure all contact with donors, the general public, staff from other agencies and with staff from other Salvation Army programs are courteous and professional. Treat all residents and other staff with respect and dignity at all times.


  • Financial Responsibilities: Complete individual and household inventories annually as per agency policies. Verify cash on hand balance each shift.


  • Team Leadership: Participate in staff meetings.


  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.


Minimum Education Level Attained: The successful job applicant will have completed high school/Grade 12 or the equivalent. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be acceptable

Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certificates, Or Requirements:

  • St John Ambulance Standard First Aid & CPR “A” or equivalent (within six weeks of hiring – must be obtained before working alone)
  • Valid Manitoba Class V driver license
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (as available – will be considered an asset on hiring)
  • American Sign Language (will be considered an asset on hiring)

Exposure to Hazards:

  • Minor risk of physical attack from members
  • Moderate exposure to household cleaning supplies
  • Minor to moderate exposure to bodily fluids/wastes
  • Minor to moderate exposure to risk of traffic accidents when driving

Precautionary Measures:

  • Communicable disease precautions
  • Current certification in First Aid & CPR
  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention training
  • Personal Health Information Act training
  • Criminal record check
  • Child Abuse and Adult Registry check
