Open Arms Coordinator – To help develop, coordinate and execute programs undertaken in Open Arms Centre. This position is also responsible for building positive community partnerships both with the tenants and the local organizations in the area.



  • Ensure support program delivery congruent with the Centre of Hope’s (COH) Mission, Vision and Values.
  • Work in accordance with COH policies, procedures and philosophy of practice.
  • Complete and maintain records, assessments, daily statistics and files, and ensure confidentiality is protected.
  • Commit to the development of COH projects and activities and participate in internal committees.
  • Design and Develop program and service development to ensure that quality, effective and client-centered programs and services are delivered.
  • Provide a supportive environment and foster a therapeutic milieu that promotes empowerment.
  • As required, assist in the running of any new programs that are created
  • Be an active participant in any local community groups that will further our outreach into the community
  • Make recommendations to the Director regarding the direction and operation of the Open Arms Centre in Uniacke Square
  • Have knowledge of The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement as well as policy, philosophy and procedures of The Salvation Army to ensure they are being upheld and implemented through Biblical / Ministry focused intention.
  • Model appropriate professional behavior
  • Foster relationships both with the clientele and the community partners to maximize effectiveness of the Centre. The ability to actively join the community agencies is a must.
  • Develop, coordinate and implement programs for children, aged 5 -16 with a Biblical lens.
  • Facilitate daily Children’s / Youth programming with program staff.
  • Conduct yearly employee performance reviews of staff
  • Must have or be prepared to get a Class 4 License (or be willing to obtain)
  • Participate in the hiring of new employees

  • Perform other duties a required;

  • Knowledge of mental health issues, substance abuse and crisis intervention.
  • Demonstrated exceptional level of interpersonal, communication and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to build appropriate and healthy rapport with at-risk persons.
  • Extensive knowledge of community resources and the social service delivery system.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and using the Internet.
  • Demonstrated high level of understanding of Social Justice.
  • Experience delivering diverse Children’s / Youth programming.
  • Experience and knowledge working with cross-cultural communities.

  • An undergraduate degree or Diploma in the Social Services/Human Services Field of study or other relevant undergraduate degree/diploma or a combination of education and experience.
  • Chaplaincy Certification an asset
  • A minimum of one to three years of experience working with at-risk children.
  • Non-violent crisis intervention (NVCI), Suicide Intervention (ASSIST), Standard First Aid and COH medication training and/or a commitment to secure those requirements within six months of being hired, Criminal Record Check, WHMIS.
  • Experience in program development.
  • Experience working for a Walk-in Centre of a non-profit organization is an asset.
  • Independent and a team player
  • Child abuse / Vulnerable Sector Registry check 


  • The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within various residential or community settings. The incumbent will work under the following disagreeable conditions: dealing with angry and abusive people, verbal abuse, odours, and exposure to drugs and alcohol.
  • Monday to Friday, actual hours will vary according to requirements of responsibilities – some weekend and evening work may be required.
  • This is a Full time position based on 37.5 hours per week;
  • Normal location of work is at The Salvation Army Halifax Centre of Hope, 2038 Gottingen Street and 5424, 5426, 5428 Uniacke Square, Halifax, NS.
