This is a temporary, full-time position based upon 35 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Normal hours of operation are Monday to Saturday,  afternoons

Normal location of work is at St. Catharines Salvation Army Community & Family Services, 400 Niagara Street, St. Catharines, Ontario L2M 7N5.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, supervise, and work cooperatively with volunteers.
  • Coordinate volunteers and food preparation for Mobile Outreach Vehicle.
  • Assist with the loading of prepared food onto Mobile Outreach Vehicle
  • Ensure truck is loaded with assistance items such as clothing, blankets, etc. for consumer provided service through the Mobile Outreach Vehicle program.
  • Provide mobile crisis intervention to those who are homeless/at risk of homelessness on the streets, three evenings per week in each of the targeted communities.
  • Work amongst the crowd at all stops earning trust and building a rapport with consumers.
  • Complete a brief intake and rapid assessment on each person requesting services.
  • Provide brief counseling, problem solving and make referrals as necessary in partnership with support staff
  • Provide follow-up service on all referrals and consumer needs as required in partnership with other Salvation Army programs
  • Develop a network for existing services and resources in the community including other Salvation Army Centers
  • Contact emergency service personnel (ambulance/police) as needed.
  • Each evening complete and submit detailed daily case notes.
  • Ensure that statistical data is collected and maintained on a current and consistent basis.
  • Work closely with all staff/Corps members to carry out tasks and maintain open communication.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the Mobile Outreach Vehicle; as necessary ensure that the supervisor is informed of any issues/concerns relating to maintenance etc.
  • Ensure best/safe practices are maintained at all times.
  • Perform other position related duties as required

Qualifications

  • Completed an Undergraduate University degree (e.g. B.A., B.Sc.)
  • A degree in Human (Social) Sciences is preferred
  • Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, experience in youth programs and/or outreach programs
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Self-motivated and disciplined
  • Experience/Working knowledge in word processing; spread sheet use
  • Works well with people
  • Maturity and ability to exercise good judgment
  • Ability to work both independently and with supervision
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and implement goals and plans for self and clients
  • Possess or willing to obtain First Aid, CPR and Non-violent Crisis Intervention certification.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s license, a copy of current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required; a copy of a valid driver’s license.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background check with vulnerable sector screening secured through either the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment; Note: A satisfactory criminal background check is required.
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry
  • Support for and an understanding and support of the Mission of The Salvation Army in Canadian
