A L.I.T. (Leaders in Training) Director is a supervisory position that directs and coordinates teen volunteers.  The L.I.T. Director will be responsible for scheduling, recruiting, and directing young volunteers within a summer day camp structure.

This is a temporary full-time position at 40 hours per week from June 1 - August 14, 2020.


  • Builds relationships with teens both currently at Southlands Community Church and in the community.
  • Plans and implements all aspects of the volunteer portion of the weekly program which targets children ages 6-12, with a view to each camper’s social, emotional, physical, and spiritual development.
  • Provides oversight and co-ordination of the L.I.T program volunteers, ensures adequate planning and training for each aspect of the program and the appropriate delegation of duties to each volunteer, with a view to the development of a strong, united team.
  • Plans and implements volunteer leadership development opportunities for L.I.T program volunteers, including weekly guest speakers.
  • Plans and implements a weekly evening drop-in for teens throughout the summer months.
  • Gives oversight to leadership training opportunities for L.I.T program volunteers specifically in the children’s programming at Southlands, both in the summer day camps and L.I.T program.
  • Assists with planning and implementation of KidsQuest Day Camp Program.
  • Works closely with other KidsQuest Day Camp staff members.
  • Interacts broadly with congregational members, community partners and neighborhood families.
  • Works in cooperation and consultation with the church’s administrative and pastoral care staff.
  • Prays with and shares the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with other staff, volunteers and program attendees and their families as appropriate.
  • Keeps all information confidential relative to the teens and their families as well as children and families involved in the day camp program.


Minimum Education Level Attained:

  • Must be enrolled in post-secondary studies


Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications or Requirements:

  • Must have a valid Police Check
  • Must have certificate in First Aid/CPR or willingness to receive training
  • Willing to Take TSA Armatus online training


Minimum Prior Related Experience:

  • Supportive knowledge of the mission of The Salvation Army
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced work environment
  • Experience in leading or working with youth and with youth programs in a church setting
  • Must enjoy working with children
  • Must have good organizational skills
  • Works independently with minimal supervision
  • Must have problem solving and multitasking abilities
  • Ability to give insight to volunteers
  • Positive and encouraging attitude
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and discretion


Physical Effort/Dexterity Required:

  • Must be able to join youth in a variety of activities and maintain a high energy level.


Concentration Required:

  • The performance of the job requires attention when teaching, giving advice/peer support, planning and development.
  • Maintain focus on children and program operations on a daily basis


Work Environment:

  • The work environment is typically at the Church, in community centres, and outside.  Must be flexible. The work environment may be in a variety of locations. It will include indoor and outdoor settings according to program planning and at least one off site day trip a week.
  • The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:
    • Dealing with angry/upset youth and parents
    • Verbal Abuse

Exposure to Hazards:

  • The incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:
    • Physical attacks by others
    • Exposure to infectious diseases
    • Moving objects
    • Risk of sport related injuries
