This is a casual, on-call position, Monday to Sunday as required with no guaranteed hours. Work will be offered as is available as per operational requirements.  Shifts may be days, afternoons, weekends and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break.  This is a unionized position.

Provide input in order to establish and then monitors preventative maintenance procedures for related equipment, recommends repairs and purchases as required

Report safety concerns and repair issues.

Ensure the general upkeep of facility such as,  cleaning floors, washrooms, windows, dusting, collects and disposes of garbage; vacuums

Check, clean, move, arrange and dust furniture as required

Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as, keeping sidewalks clear of snow and ice, cleaning the main floor outside windows, picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks

Check doors and windows to ensure building and resident security; provides access to the facility and secures the facility as needed, Check for health and safety issues and reports and issues

Restock washroom supplies and distributes received material as required

Wash walls, strip and wax floors and shampoo carpets as required

Change linens (i.e., bedding), following hazardous materials procedures

Do laundry for facility (bedding, linens, towels, kitchen laundry, etc.)

Assist overnight Front Desk Attendant on rounds as required

Perform other position related duties as required


Grade 12 diploma

Minimum of 6 months related work experience

General familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures

Ability to operate industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping and sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting and occasional ladder work.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.

Experience working with a vulnerable population is an asset.

Ability to work unsupervised and also function as a team member.

Knowledge of WHMIS and Health and Safety standards

First Aid/CPR Certification

Non-violent Crisis Intervention training

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening (where applicable) that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Must be able to confirm and maintain Enhanced Reliability Screening through Corrections Canada and The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Support for and an understanding of the Mission and Purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
