The Health & Safety Specialist provides support and administrative services required for proactive Health and Safety Programs and workers compensation management across the territory. This role will provide support to all ministry units in the use of our online e-claims system. This role will be responsible for providing health and safety resources and support to ministry units to ensure compliance to applicable legislation. Reporting to the Territorial Director Health Safety and Disability Management the position is responsible for the day-to-day implementation and continuous improvement of Health and Safety in the territory.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Timely response to incident notifications, provide support to MU’s, and assist the territory with incident case management.
- Maintain occupational incidents in the E- Claims system.
- Responsible for supporting Ministry Units with e-claim system inquires.
- Provides e-claims training to employees and ministry units as required.
- Ensure timely processing of documentation and data related to occupational illness and injury claims.
- Update and file Workers’ Compensation documents in employee files on the e-claims system.
- Input confidential medical and functional abilities information.
- Liaise between HR service center, HR BPs, managers, ministry units and worker compensation boards regarding workplace injuries.
- Provide administrative support to the Health & Safety Department.
- Handle confidential correspondence for the Health and Safety department including mail and email inquiries.
- Timeous Distribution and process territorial mail correspondence from all provincial WCB boards to the relevant ministry units.
- Liaises with external vendors as required (i.e.WCB Boards, AtWork Canada, CCOHS).
- Assists in the preparation of materials and evidence for use in legal or worker’s compensation proceedings or appeals.
- Responsible for contributing to the development of health safety and wellbeing communication (i.e., quarterly bulletins, divisional presentations)
- Territorial administrator for the health and safety online e-learning and LMS platforms.
- Responsible for maintaining the Health Safety and Wellbeing SharePoint site with updated relevant resources and content.
- Facilitate divisional Health & Safety Forums and meeting with MU leaders, health & safety representatives, and HR.
- Maintain and update the territorial health and safety audit non-compliance tracker.
- Provide health and safety support and resources to ministry units identified with non-compliances.
- Perform regular follow ups with ministry units to ensure the closure of any outstanding non-compliance issues
- Ensures Ministry Units are in compliance with provincial regulations, standards and policies.
- Collaborate with Ministry unit leaders and employees to promote proactive health and safety initiatives and maintain a culture of health, safety, and wellness throughout the territory.
- Assists the Territorial Health and Safety team on projects and tasks as requested.
- Assist in the creation, development, and implementation of health and safety policies, procedures, and programs in compliance with provincial regulations.
- Contribute to the development and support the delivery of training programs on health, safety, and wellness topics, to promote awareness.
- Support and act as back up to Senior Advisor for Health & Safety and Senior Advisor Health & Safety & Disability in managing WSIB, Short Term Disability and Long-Term Disability claims,
- Provide relevant metrics and analysis of data relating to health and safety for the territory.
- Develop partnerships with external agencies and organizations committed to employee safety, health, and wellness.
- Keep abreast of changes to legislation, trends, and best practices to contribute to the development of policies and work practices.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
- A university degree or diploma in Health and Safety or related field.
- CRST or CRSP designation is an asset.
- Five years experience implementing and promoting safe work practices and policies in unionized and non-unionized workplaces.
- Exposure to not-for-profit sector preferred, and knowledge of health and safety issues in the health care and social services sector considered an advantage.
- Experience with disability management, accident investigation, workplace inspections
- Strong working knowledge of Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations including recent amendments, Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and other relevant legislation.
- Comprehensive understanding of accident prevention fundamentals, and safety management principles.

- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
- Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals at all levels.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines and follow through to completion.

This is a hybrid role; the incumbent is required to report to THQ (Territorial Head Quarters) at least twice a week.
Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $58,719-$73,399, with the ability to progress to a maximum of $88,079. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
