The Finance Department is comprised of approximately 150 professional and support staff that provide corporate finance, accounting, financial reporting, investment, treasury management, and pension and payroll services to The Salvation Army. About half of the group is based at the Army’s head office in Toronto, with the remaining staff located in Calgary and St. John’s.


The General Accountant is responsible for the maintenance, and validity of The Salvation Army’s general ledgers, and associated sub-ledgers. The incumbent will prepare and process complex reconciliations and prepare major journal entries in support of these functions. The General Accountant will be the prime person responsible for a designated set of ministry unit and client financial statements, and be the prime contact for clients in the understanding and resolution of financial statement issues. Where applicable, they will identify and recommend process improvement and document processes within their area of responsibility.





  • Complete significant account reconciliations on various general ledger and sub-ledger accounts.
  • Research and/or prepare various analytical and financial reports
  • Act as the designated client contact and follow up with clients concerning outstanding issues related to financial statement and accounting processes
  • On a regular basis review unit financial statements for accuracy, and financial health (i.e. Cash flow, fund balances, budgetary performance, etc.)
  • Prepare various accruals as required
  • Work on special projects as required.
  • Ensure tax rebates are claimed appropriately
  • Initiate bank transfers for both incoming and outgoing funds.
  • Complete daily bank reconciliations.
  • Ensure transactions are supported by authorizations that are obtained, entered and recorded prior to the release of documents.
  • Ensure invoices are appropriately established as accruals or pre-paids in line with accepted policy.
  • Remain fluent with and understand Salvation Army policies to ensure accounting transactions are in line with policy and procedure.
  • Ensure transactions are supported by adequate supporting documentation, in accordance with official policy and properly approved.
  • Initiate and maintain ongoing communications with clients, treating them with respect and courtesy at all times. Develop an understanding of client requirements, providing detailed solutions and explanations to queries.
  • Initiate all transactions by due date
  • Ensure transactions are reflected in the proper accounting period
  • Reports to the Senior General Accountant any concerns regarding the accounting and financial health of ministry units.



  • Completion of university degree in accounting from an accredited program
  • Enrolment in studies leading to a professionally recognized accounting designation preferred
  • Must have at least three years’ experience in Accounts payable, and/or Accounts receivable and/or General Ledger.
  • Intermediate Excel spreadsheet skills, knowledge of Word and excellent verbal and written communication skills and customer service skills are a must.
  • Must be flexible and adaptable and know how to prioritize their work.
  • Must possess excellent organizational skills and be able to multitask.
