Description
The Maintenance Assistant/Driver provides support to various departments including pick up of food items for Food Services, Walmart (retail) for Thrift Store and supporting maintenance department in general repairs and cleaning of the buildings. This position will be directed by the Maintenance Supervisor for work projects such as general repair and painting; ensuring exterior of building is kept tidy; and assisting with general cleaning of the building. This position will be responsible to drive and maintain the program vehicle for scheduled pick-ups of donations in the City of Barrie
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Maintenance - 75%
- Assist the Maintenance Supervisor to perform minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as electrical (ex; fuses, light bulbs, thermostat) and, plumbing (handles, drains, clogged pipes), as well as undertakes minor renovation projects, including dry walling, painting and carpentry.
- Learn how to conduct minor troubleshooting of building systems.
- Maintains a personal log sheet. Record all tasks undertaken during shift.
- Working with the maintenance supervisor and team to ensure the general upkeep of the facilities including all scheduled maintenance weekly, monthly, yearly etc.
- Assist in performing the fire inspection review as per policy and logbook.
- Report safety concerns and major repair issues to Maintenance Supervisor.
- Clean all window surfaces both internal and external.
- Thoroughly disinfect and sanitize all dorm beds on a weekly basis.
- Conduct minor repairs to walls, doors as required.
- Thoroughly steam clean kitchen, storage rooms and washrooms as required.
- Perform custodian cleaning tasks including sweeping, mopping, disinfecting areas, cleaning of washrooms as directed by Maintenance Supervisor.
- Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
- Ensure the general upkeep of external property which includes but not limited to picking up litter, sweeping sidewalks, etc.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Driver – 25%
- Ensure the safe and careful handling of all pick-ups while protecting property, including donations and vehicles.
- Pick up donations and supplies from suppliers/vendors and unload goods at Bayside Mission Centre and/or Essa Thrift Store.
- Provide donors with courteous and diplomatic service.
- Perform daily circle checks of vehicle, maintain accurate vehicle logs, safe operation of vehicle and reports required repairs/maintenance to Maintenance Supervisor.
- Ensure vehicle is completely cleaned (inside and outside) on a weekly basis. Washes down and sanitizes cab of vehicle. Sweeps and mops inside of cargo area. Take vehicle through a drive-through car wash.
- Ensure all fluid levels are full according to manufacturer’s requirements.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- This is a permanent full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- The supervisor sets the hours of work and work schedule and flexibility in scheduling is required.
- Ability to reach, bend, stoop and lift more than 25 pounds.
- May deal with angry and abusive clients.
- May encounter verbal abuse.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Grade 12 education.
- Completion of Non-Violence Crisis Intervention Training or willingness to obtain.
- Current First Aid and CPR or willingness to obtain.
- Completion of Joint Health & Safety Certification program or willingness to obtain.
- Current WHMIS certificate or willingness to obtain.
- Completion of Working at Heights Certificate or willingness to obtain.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License and a current copy of a Driver’s abstract for review and verification that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Minimum of three (3) months but less than one (1) year of prior related experience, including life skills and general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures.
- Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health and Safety Regulations, Provincial and Municipal Highway traffic acts.
- Possess good working knowledge of cleaning materials and equipment.
SKILLS AND CAPABILITIES
- Ability to work with people experiencing homelessness.
- Possess excellent problem solving, communication, and organizational skills.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills, ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Possess a positive attitude and works well with other team members, volunteers, and clients.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Good communication skills (verbal and written) in English.
- To maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and staff of The Salvation Army.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
