Position Purpose Summary:

Broadview Village has 40+ years of providing outstanding support to adults with developmental disabilities and mental health challenges and we are currently hiring a Life Skills Counsellor for our P.L.U.S. Program. The P.L.U.S. Program provides a range of supports to individuals with mental health challenges who are interested in preparing for employment opportunities in the community. This position reports to the Program Supervisor and the current location assignment in the Toronto (Lawrence and DVP) area.

The Life Skills Counsellor provides support to program participants within established policies and procedures including: Employment Standards, Collective Agreements, payroll procedures, Salvation Army Accreditation, and Services and Supports to Promote the Social Inclusion of Persons with Developmental Disabilities Act, 2008 (SIPDDA).



  • Provide individualized counselling services to a caseload of up to 30 clients within the rehabilitation model, philosophy, and policies of the Agency
  • Establish and maintain purposeful, effective and appropriate professional counselling relationships
  • Design and implement a goal-oriented rehabilitation plan with each client
  • Provide crisis intervention, supportive counselling and advocacy when
  • required
  • Assist with the Social Recreation Program by:
  • Receiving input from the members to plan activities, groups and outings
  • Being responsible for facilitating and supervising activities such as games, cooking, arts and crafts and sports
  • Encouraging active participation of the membership by participating alongside members
  • Seeking out resources required to provide the above activities such as speakers/instructors, materials and supplies required for groups and games
  • Being responsible for outreach to potential members and current members to encourage participation
  • Being responsible for the intake process for the club
  • Being involved in the evaluation of the program periodically to ensure ongoing meaningful adult recreational pursuits are available to the members and exploring alternate program models
  • Instruct and supervise clients in performing work activities on assigned assembly lines within the workshop / workfloor
  • Assign clients to work activities based on the production need and on their individual functioning level
  • Ensure the appropriate safety procedures are followed at all times and to assist with all aspects of workplace safety and cleanliness
  • Responsible for supervision of the Workfloor on assigned shifts and to fulfill duties as back-up when another staff is absent
  • Provide services typically described under the term “case management” in the absence of any other support and based on client need
  • Co-ordinate/consult with other professionals involved with the Client and make referrals to various sectors of the community
  • Keep all files in a manner which meets agency expectations
  • Driving weekly / periodically for procuring groceries for the kitchen program and ‘Meal that Heal’ Program
  • Demonstrate acceptable professional behaviour as outlined in the policies and procedures of the Agency and in the Social Work Code of Ethics


  • Be involved in evaluation and planning for counselling programs, the Social Recreation Club and the Food Preparation Training Program, grocery shopping, food delivery for Meals that Heal Program
  • Ensure Client work activity on assigned lines meets customer specifications
  • Participate and hold membership in committees and meetings as required
  • Keep Client and Member records, reports and statistical information as prescribed by the Administration
  • Be involved in supervision with the Program Director / Supervisor
  • Participate constructively and energetically as a responsible team member
  • Supervise volunteers and student placements in the program within the guidelines of the Agency and the academic institution
  • Be responsible for professional self-development, maintain up to date mandatory training record
  • Have knowledge of Agency philosophy, policy and procedures and to ensure these are upheld


  • Bachelor of Social Work or equivalent
  • Counselling experience in Mental Health, Developmental Challenges or Addictions field
  • Life Skills Coaching Certificate preferred
  • Ability to model desirable work behaviours
  • Demonstrated documentation skills
  • Valid Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR, Level C
  • Ability to achieve Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certificate upon hire
  • Valid G or G2 driver’s license preferred

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening, completed no less than 2 months prior to date of hire
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

HOURS: 35 hours per week, flexible to meet program needs
