The Family Services Worker provides support to the Fenelon Falls community through Community and Family Services programming, including, but not limited to, the Food Bank.


Client Services, Intake and Assessments:

  • Processing, unloading, documenting, and sorting food donations (as well as toys during Christmas season).
  • Preparing donated food items for distribution as part of regular Food Bank operations, and as part of the Christmas Hamper program in December.
  • Pick-ups of food donations and grocery reclamation from community grocery store.
  • Perform client intake, schedule Food Bank appointments, and distribute food hampers to people accessing food assistance; refer clients to other community resources where applicable.
  • Administer the Voucher Program to assist people with identified/requested assistance in obtaining emergency clothing and/or essential household goods from The Salvation Army Thrift Store (Fenelon Falls).
  • Schedule, recruit, and train volunteers to assist with Food Bank operations (reception, refreshments, making appointments by phone, distributing food hampers to people accessing food assistance).
  • Liaise with Kawartha Lakes Food Source to receive donations, participate in food drives, and attend meetings as a Member Agency.
  • Liaise with other community food banks to share and/or request food items as required.
  • Connect with local churches and community groups to encourage and support food drives.
  • Program coordination of Teaching Kitchen, PA Day Kids’ Kitchen, weekly or monthly community meal programs
  • May provide assistance in the Christmas Kettle Campaign where needed.

Administration and Database Systems:

  • Record statistical data in a clear, organized and accurate manner, using Link2Feed and The Salvation Army’s Client Management System to record client assistance (Food Bank, Voucher, and Christmas assistance, as well as volunteer hours tracking).

Health and Safety

  • Ensure that the food bank and area is maintained regarding appearance, condition and safety as recommended by Public Health etc.
  • Seek out continual education and resources for all areas of responsibilities, specifically regarding COVID-19 requirements as per the local Health Unit.
  • Ensure the safety and comfort of the volunteers and clients by maintaining cleanliness and health and safety rules.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.

Perform other position related duties as required.


  • This is a permanent, full-time position, 30 hours per week.
  • Flexibility in scheduling is required, as the hours may increase during the Christmas Campaign season: shifts may include afternoons, evenings, and weekend shifts, Monday through Saturday during the Christmas Campaign season (lieu time will be accrued).
  • Required to wear appropriate Salvation Army identification.
  • Local travel may be associated with this position.
  • Heavy lifting will be required in the Food Bank.



  • Completed Secondary School.


  • Minimum of two (2) years of prior related experience would be preferred
  • Safe Food Handling Certification would be an asset


  • Excellent interpersonal skills, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Demonstrates compassion for people experiencing hardship, poverty, and crisis.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lb. boxes.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Valid Ontario Class “G” Driver’s License, personal vehicle required and insurance, current copy of driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
  • Must be willing and able to work flexible hours including evenings and Saturdays, when required.
  • Ability to represent The Salvation Army in a positive and professional manner in the community.
  • Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
  • Honest, courteous and punctual; represent the organization in a positive, professional and engaging manner.
  • Treat the property of The Salvation Army with due care and caution.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, and internet.
  • Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
  • Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening.
