Responsibilities

Community and Family Services

  • Conduct intake interviews with food bank clients and assess eligibility for assistance in accordance with established standards
  • Prepare food hampers for clients or direct volunteers to do so
  • Enter personal and assistance data into Link2Feed
  • Ensure that the food bank is maintained in an organized, clean and tidy and safe manner
  • Receive non-monetary donations and weekly food shipment from Railside Distribution Centre and other sources
  • Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials
  • Arrange for the proper disposal of items received but not usable in the food bank
  • Assist with recruiting new volunteers
  • Direct and assist in supervision work of volunteers working in the food bank
  • Assist with weekly lunch program, Christmas Assistance Program and Christmas Kettle Campaign as required
  • Actively promote York Community Church and Community & Family Services programs to food bank clients
  • Refer clients to other community resources where appropriate
  • Other duties as required

Children’s Programing

  • Organize and supervise weekly afterschool and/or evening programs for Corps and community children grades 1-12 (by age groups)
  • Organize and supervise discipleship and outreach Programs
  • Recruit, direct and supervise volunteers for children’s and youth programs
  • Organize and supervise programs for community and corps children on PA days and during summer holidays, March break and any other appropriate occasions
  • Recruit and register children and youth for Salvation Army provincial camping programs and other regional and divisional events
  • Follow up with children/youth who attend Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the corps and its mission and ministries
  • Assist the Corps Officer in the pastoral care and spiritual development of children and their families by mentoring, discipling, encouraging and modeling appropriate Christian attitudes and behaviours
  • Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information
  • Attend meetings of the corps council when appropriate/required

 

Qualifications

  • Must be a high school graduate (Possession of a minimum of a 2 year diploma or degree in a related field or to be able to demonstrate that he/she has obtained an equivalent body of knowledge and skills through other training and experience would be an asset)
  • Have a minimum of two years of demonstrated successful involvement in working with children and their families
  • Ability to main appropriate confidentiality
  • Possess a spiritual passion for the spiritual development and well-being of young people and a love for the church
  • Be in agreement with and committed to the doctrines and positional statements of The Salvation Army as well as to the ministry of York Community Church
  • In order to facilitate the integration of the CFS and Children’s ministries with the whole ministry of York Community Church, it is desirable that the successful candidate will be actively involved in the life, worship and ministry of the church
  • Ability to lead worship/singing with guitar and/or piano would be considered an asset
  • Strong ability to work with difficult or emotionally needy people in a patient and compassionate manner
  • Be able to work effectively in a multi-racial and multicultural environment and with economically disadvantaged families
  • Be highly creative, well organized and self-motivated
  • Possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Possess excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills
  • Be an excellent team player and able to organize and motivate teams
  • Possess good computer skills including the ability to learn new software
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver’s license. Access to a reliable vehicle would be an asset

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • A clear internal abuse registry check
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

HOURS: 35 hours per week
