Position Purpose Summary:

The Children and Youth Ministries Coordinator will work alongside Scarborough Citadel (SC) Corps Officers and Leadership Team providing mentoring, discipleship, and outreach ministry to children and youth within the congregation and the local community. The incumbent is expected to become a member of SC in good standing.

 

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and direction to the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of all aspects of a children and youth ministry for JK-grade 12 focusing on mentorship, discipleship, worship and outreach
  • Ability to balance the demands of both the children’s and youth’s ministries utilizing volunteers in leading promise-land, helping with Youth Bible Study and sermon group
  • Recruit and train and equip capable, qualified leaders and volunteers for children and youth ministry
  • Work in collaboration with SC’s children and youth volunteers regarding the regular activities geared to children JK-grade 12 so that they can effectively provide discipleship and mentoring
  • Establish schedules for Sunday Morning Children’s Program
  • Assign tasks, and support volunteer teachers
  • Actively participate in delivery of program
  • Plan and prepare lesson packages (from current curriculum) and distribute them to volunteer teachers every week
  • Make sure classroom supplies are always available and responsible for purchasing supplies for youth and children activities
  • Communicate with Corps Officers on a regular basis to share information about ongoing serious situations with children, youth and their families
  • Manage youth group’s social media, and collaborate with corps’ social media management
  • Send parents the weekly emails regarding Sunday School classes, parent updates and invites to events
  • Assist in the planning, and guide in the delivery, of Children and Youth Sunday Worship Services in collaboration with the corps officer(s) and music group leaders, and ensuring the preparation and involvement of children and youth
  • Offer support and facilitate the involvement of children and youth in worship as required
  • Attend summer camp programs (as an overnight chaperone and at our daycare programs) to strengthen relationships with youth and children
  • Promote, recruit and attend divisional events. (i.e. Fuse, Junior Youth Councils. etc.)
  • Plan and give immediate oversight to youth activities: TDI, Bible study, Sermon discussion, etc.
  • Promote and participate in training events hosted by the division and/or other suitable organizations
  • Working in conjunction with the administrative assistant and corps officers ensure compliance with all Salvation Army policies related to the screening process for children and youth workers and volunteers, keeping up-to-date records
  • Organize and maintain the youth and children’s ministry classrooms, nursery and storage room ensuring cleanliness and safety
  • Work with the Community and Family Services Coordinator to register corps children for summer camps
  • Follow up with families and children of the community who attended camps operated by The Salvation Army
  • Be actively involved in outreach to the children and youth of our community, interacting and building relationships with children, youth and their families and encouraging involvement in existing church programs
  • Assist in the toy room during Christmas as required
  • Organize and hold fundraising activities intermittently in support of our children and youth ministries
  • Participate in staff meetings as required
  • Participate in weekly staff devotions on Thursday mornings
  • Maintain and develop personal spiritual life in order to continue to have a vibrant faith to share with others
  • May be required to drive children to camp and to other activities
  • Other duties as determined by the Corps Officer

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of University/Community College or post-secondary education relating to Christian education for Children and Youth and/or an applicable level of field-related training, knowledge and experience
  • Accepts the mission and values of The Salvation Army
  • Experience working with children and youth and volunteers in a church environment.
  • Strong organizational, motivational, administrative and computer skills
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Communication skills (oral & written) and an ability to interact with the public with a positive attitude
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision
  • Good computer skills and ability to embrace growing technology needs
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (i.e. Word, Excel, Publisher, and PowerPoint); Internet and social media
  • Provides and able to take direction as well as a willingness to be coached
  • A valid Ontario Driver’s license preferred

Successful candidate will be required to provide upon hiring:

  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clear internal abuse registry check
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Participate in our online Armatus Abuse Training and Health and Safety training required upon hiring, as well as updated annually

HOURS: 30 hours per week. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule including nights and weekends as required
