This is a permanent, full-time position based on 26 hours per week with benefits after three months.  Normal hours of operation are Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The hours of work will vary from week to week as per operational requirements.  The supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.  This will include a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

Please note: There may be a seasonal temporary increase in hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a  period of time during the months of November and December, and includes a ½ hour unpaid meal break where applicable.

Conduct intake services, client assessment to determine immediate needs and supports needed by the client.

Prepare food hampers for clients or direct volunteers to do so

Enter personal and assistance data into Client Management System (CMS)

Ensure that the food bank is maintained in an organized, clean and tidy and safe manner

Receive non-monetary donations

Ensure safe handling of hazardous materials

Arrange for the proper disposal of items received but not usable in the food bank

Record statistical data in a clear, organized and accurate manner

Foster and maintain positive working relationships with volunteers and sponsors

Assist with recruiting new volunteers

Direct and supervise work of volunteers working in the food bank

Assist with Christmas Programs and Christmas Kettle Campaign as required

Actively promote Simcoe Community Church and Community & Family Services programs to food bank clients

Refer clients to other community resources where appropriate

Provide spiritual support to clients

Network and refer to The Salvation Army, government, and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients and program when necessary

Actively promote Simcoe Community Church and Community & Family Services programs within the community

Maintain and develop relationships with various social services groups

Work with supervisor with the Divisional Emergency Disaster Services Director to recruit and train local team of EDS Volunteers

Recruit and register children and youth for Salvation Army provincial camping programs

Follow up with children/youth who attend Salvation Army summer camp programs, including their families, in order to build relationships and establish active links with the Corps and its mission and ministries

Maintain written records, logs of activities, including activity reports and statistical information

Perform other position related duties as required


Completion of a Community College Diploma in Social Services work or equivalent

Minimum of one (1) year of prior related experience, including experience in a direct counselling environments, which may include issues of homelessness, mental health, unemployment, abuse, addiction, etc.

Experience in one-on-one and group counseling.

Self-motivated, disciplined and well organized.

Demonstrate a high level of integrity, good judgment and ability to maintain appropriate confidentiality

Knowledge of community based resources and experience networking with government and social service agencies.

Strong ability to work with difficult or emotionally needy people in a patient and compassionate manner

Be able to work effectively with economically disadvantaged people

Possess Safe Food Handlers Certification would be an asset

Excellent interpersonal and conflict management skills

Communicate Effectively: Speak, listen, and write in a clear, thorough, and timely manner using appropriate and effective communication tools and techniques in both one-on-one and group settings.

Foster Teamwork: Work cooperatively and effectively with others to set goals, resolve problems, and make decisions that enhance organizational effectiveness.

Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.

Ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy work environment

Ability to lift up to 40 lbs./18.14 Kgs

Experience with general office equipment and Microsoft Office a good working knowledge of Excel

Current Certification in First Aid & CPR would be a definite asset.

Valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, own vehicle and insurance and current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.

Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.  The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.

Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.

Support of and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
