This is a permanent, part-time position based on 12 - 20 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal breaks. There will be a seasonal temporary increase in hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a period of time during the months of November and December.

Normal hours of operation are:

  • Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
  • Wednesday and Friday 9:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Normal locations of work are:

  • The Salvation Army Community and Family Services, 970 Confederation Street, Sarnia
  • The Salvation Army Community and Family Services, 122 Christina Street, Sarnia.

Responsibilities

  • Provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service.
  • Required to follow precautionary measures, i.e. universal precautions, required to wear safety shoes or boots and reflective vest at all times and gloves when applicable.
  • Assist the truck driver with pickups and deliveries for the Community and Family Services and Thrift Store during the hours of operation.
  • Place merchandise in designated areas within the store or warehouse (backroom).
  • Ensure that merchandise is unloaded from the truck by the end of each shift.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of the truck when a recycling run is required.
  • Assist with the loading and unloading of the truck as required when a trip to the dump is required to dispose of the garbage.
  • Contribute to the overall safety of staff and customers (eg. snow removal, ensures that fire exits are clear, no obstacles inside/outside the store).
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling and pickup of all deliveries, donations etc. while protecting the property, including donations and vehicles.
  • Maintain knowledge of legislative and company policies such as Health & Safety Regulations, provincial and municipal highway traffic acts.
  • Perform other position related duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of Elementary School
  • A minimum of three (3) months of prior related experience
  • Demonstrate an ability to communicate with and work with customers, peers and other Salvation Army personnel.
  • The performance of this job requires frequent twisting, bending, crouching, reaching, lifting and kneeling.
  • Self-motivated and reliable
  • Have a working knowledge of warehouse and stocking procedures.
  • Experience operating a cash register, debit machine as asset
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to lift/move more than 40 lbs.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
  • May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • Support for and an understanding of the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada.
