This is a temporary, full-time position based upon 32.5 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required, schedule may vary, some evening and weekend work may be required.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.  Normal work location is at 80 Bay St. N. Hamilton, ON and 150 King St. W. Dundas, ON and requires travel within surrounding areas.

Shifts: Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Start Date:  November 30, 2020

End Date:  April 2, 2021

Operational hours of this facility are 9:00 AM -4:00 PM

Responsibilities

The primary accountability for the Driver/Warehouse worker is to provide a service of pick-ups from donors to The Salvation Army Community & Family Services and to assist in providing a clean, well stocked and well organized warehouse area in conjunction with the Warehouse Supervisor.

Administrative

  • To complete all job related duties in accordance with the standards, policies and procedures of The Salvation Army Hamilton Community & Family Services
  • As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Program Director
  • Provide support to community projects and events as requested by Community & Family Services Program Director

Warehouse

  • In coordination with the Warehouse Supervisor:
  • Ensure the warehouse and all Community Services/Food Bank storage areas are organized, clean and safe at all times
  • Maintain adequate inventory, reporting any surplus or deficiency to the Warehouse Supervisor
  • Ensure all products are handled, stored and used appropriately, ensuring older product is used first
  • In absence of Warehouse Supervisor:
  • Monitor freezer and refrigerator daily, record temperatures and report any concerns to the Community & Family Services Warehouse Supervisor
  • Coordinate unloading of incoming product; report any damaged goods on arrival at Ministry Unit
  • Provide regular updates to the Warehouse Supervisor or designate regarding warehouse activities
  • Provide regular updates to the Community & Family Services workers regarding new or excess items to be distributed through the food bank
  • In coordination with the Volunteer Coordinator, ensure warehouse volunteers, adhere to health and safety rules and protocols

Pick-ups/Deliveries

  • Coordinate pick-up schedule with the Warehouse Supervisor
  • Ensure the safe and careful handling of deliveries, pick-ups, donations and funds while protecting property, including donations and vehicles
  • Provide customers and donors with courteous and diplomatic service while building and maintaining positive relationships
  • Maintain knowledge of company policies and procedure, particularly Health & Safety
  • Load and unload goods at the warehouse and designated locations
  • Assist with the receipt, recording (documentation), movement, storage, sorting, packing and distribution of food and related products for the food bank operation

Vehicle Maintenance

  • Perform circle checks of trucks and maintain vehicles logs according to the MTO and CVOR requirements before all trips
  • Take responsibility for daily and overall safety, general maintenance, operation of the vehicles, and complete appropriate records
  • Maintain cleanliness of program vehicles
  • Monitor and report any maintenance and repairs of vehicles promptly to supervisor

Health and Safety

  • Work in compliance with the OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures
  • Responsible to use personal protective equipment and clothing as directed by the employer
  • Responsible to report workplace hazards and dangers
  • Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer and use the prescribed safety equipment
  • Responsible to promptly report workplace injuries or illness

Qualifications

  • Completed secondary school plus specialized courses (up to 6 months) in the relevant area
  • Valid Class G drivers license with clean driving record (Driver’s Abstract is required)
  • One (1) year prior experience driving a commercial vehicle (i.e. cube van, panel van, cube truck)
  • Forklift certification or willingness and ability to be trained to operate a forklift
  • Ability to operate pallet jack and other warehouse equipment
  • Experience in shipping and materials handling is an asset
  • Good organizational, interpersonal skills
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Punctual, self-motivated and disciplined
  • Be able to lift/move up to 50lbs and to stand for long periods of time
  • First Aid/CPR and NVCI training
  • Provide an original copy of a background check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion. The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
