About the Position

The primary role of the Digital Archivist is to digitize, process and record archival holdings in all forms according to the policies, standards, and procedures of The Salvation Army Archives Canada and Bermuda Territory.  This includes documents, photos, audio and video materials, born digital assets as well as artifacts.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

General Duties

  • Appraises archival holdings in all formats with a view to develop efficient, effective, and appropriate processes to digitize items based on The Salvation Army Archives policies and procedures. This includes establishing priorities to digitize higher risk items.
  • Collaborates with archives staff to establish workflows for the ingest and processing of digitized and born-digital assets for access and research.
  • Advises on and contributes to the establishment and maintenance of a digital repository within Soutron.
  • Provides advice on, and in consultation with the Director, implements a technical framework related to digitization of analogue records.
  • Researches, recommends, and in consultation with the Director, implements standards and protocols to preserve digital records.
  • In consultation with the Director, assists in the promotion of TSA archival holdings through social media outreach and website updates.
  • In consultation with the Director, manages image/video visual capture of collection materials and other artworks, using scanning and camera technology, and recording technology, including research reference, promotional materials, website applications, and publications.

Image/Audio-Visual Duties

  • Prepares high-resolution and preservation files, as well as low resolution files for working use.
  • Uploads prepared digital images/audio/videos to The Salvation Army’s digital archives and collections data base (Soutron).
  • In consultation with the Accessionist/Researcher catalogues digitized items in accordance with The Salvation Army’s cataloguing processes (Soutron).
  • Practices detailed digital asset standards, following file-naming and location procedures.
  • Operates the audio lab, visual lab, and photo lab, ensuring the equipment is updated and serviced as needed.
  • Ensures that transcriptions from audio and visual assets are edited and accurate.

Other Duties

  • Retrieves and re-files collection material while observing existing physical order in storage.
  • Calibrates, cleans, and prepares all components of scanners, recorders and workstation on a regular basis.
  • Assists with preparation of displays and presentations for various functions as needed.
  • Assists with research projects and retrieval of information as needed.
  • Supports other staff members as needed.
  • Performs other duties as required.

Health & Safety:

  • Undertake orientation of Archives emergency protocols and equipment under the direction of the Director
  • Complete TSA Health and Safety Courses as required

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Completion of a post-secondary degree in History, Library Science, Archival Studies or a related field with an emphasis on digital media.
  • ~3 years of relevant experience.
  • Knowledge of Salvation Army history, mission, structure, and terminology is a definite asset.
  • Skills in photography is a definite asset.
  • Previous experience working on digital imaging, operating and maintaining digitization equipment such as scanners, cameras, and lighting is preferred.
  • Experience and understanding of museum-standard handling and preservation guidelines.
  • Experience and understanding of Mac platforms, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Excel

  • Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable working in a storage area, and able to lift boxes of archival material weighing 20 kilos.

Compensation

The target hiring range for this position is $42,230 - $51,538 with the ability to progress to a maximum of $61,845. Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
