The Corps Ministry Assistant is a member of the Corps Ministry Team of St. John’s Citadel.  The position reports to the Corps Officers (Pastors).  The position assists the Corps Officers and supports the Corps ministry by providing pastoral care to all adult age groups, implementing discipleship programs, supporting leaders in the adult ministries/programs and participating in worship services


  • Contributes to the spiritual and pastoral development of individuals associated with the Corps (church) by mentoring, disciplining, encouraging and modeling appropriate Christian attitudes and behaviours
  • Develops, implements, maintains and evaluates programs/ministries relevant to the church body and the community at large; plans and conducts creative worship services, evangelistic outreach, pastoral care programs (including on-going visitation), and Bible studies as applicable
  • Assists in the planning of strategies and events to promote inclusion into the church fellowship
  • Prays with and/or leads individuals to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits
  • Develops and implements appropriate leadership development programs; recruits, orients and trains volunteer leaders; assists individuals in identifying and employing their spiritual gifts for the benefit of the church body
  • Works as a key member with other members of the Corps (church) Ministry team and local leadership in corporate problem solving for the benefit of the church and individuals
  • Knows and acts in accordance with security procedures of the Corps (church) to ensure the safety and confidentially of participants and information
  • Interacts with community partners and resources to provide services to individuals associated with the ministry; may include participation on community committees and para church organizations
  • Maintains written records/logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information)
  • Provides pastoral care to support the spiritual development and well-being of all adult age groups in the Corps (church) including visitation at home, hospitals and nursing homes as appropriate, and engage the Corps Officers (pastors) in situations as required
  • Outreach to adults and families who are newcomers, or part of the Corps family and do not attend the Corps regularly
  • Establish and provide oversight to small group ministry to provide disciplining, spiritual development and fellowship
  • Support the planning and implementation of adult programs/ministries including new and on-going ministries/programs and special events
  • Provide support to adult ministry/program leaders and assist with recruiting, orienting, training and volunteer leaders
  • Participates in, or gives leadership to, Sunday Services as determined by the Corps Officers (pastors), including preaching as appropriate
  • Conducts or assists the Corps Officers with weddings, funerals and dedications as appropriate
  • Member of the Mission board and any other Corps (church) committees as determined with the Corps Officers (pastors)
  • Participate in Divisional events and committees as determined with the Corps Officers (pastors)
  • Performs other duties as assigned


  • Post-secondary education in a relevant field


Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • Clear understanding of the ministry/vision of The Salvation Army and the St. John’s Citadel Corps
  • Spiritually mature individual with an understanding of the pastoral care needs of individuals and families
  • Experience in pastoral care and developing/implementing adult ministries/programs
  • Ability to build relationships and engage in relational ministry opportunities with individuals and families
  • Strong communication skills
  • Organizational/time management skills
  • Strong team player/leadership skills
  • Computer skills


  •  Participation in The Salvation Army St. John’s Citadel Corps (church) as an active member is expected
  • Have insured personal vehicle, valid driver’s license and a copy of a current Driver’s Abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army
  • Flexible working hours
  • Provide an original copy of a Criminal Background/Vulnerable Sector Check through the local police department
  • Screening through The Salvation Army’s Internal Abuse Registry
  • Be willing to sign the Salvation Army Code of Conduct Receipt and Acknowledgement Form

TERM: Temporary (sick leave replacement); 35 hours per week irregular including evenings and weekends
