Description
The Community Ministries Worker position assists individuals and families who are seeking aid and assistance from, or have been referred to, The Salvation Army through our Emergency Food and Clothing Voucher program. This temporary position will assist in a time when there is a higher need for support due to the pandemic.
Hours of work are 37.5 per week.
Responsibilities
- Conducts initial intake assessments (including evaluation of client/family protection issues), determining immediate needs and supports needed by the client.
- Through exercising empathetic care, assists individuals to determine an appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal process; facilitates effective problem-solving behaviours of the client/family
- Provides emergency assistance services (i.e. housing, shelter, food, clothing, etc.) in accordance with policy
- Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files and statistical records
- Assists in the organization, maintenance and general cleanliness of the Food Bank and/or Meal Centre, etc.
- May be responsible for ensuring safe handling of hazardous materials
- Arranges for discarding of items that are not usable in accordance with policy
- May take part in community based meal programs, as assigned
- May direct work of volunteers assisting in the Food Bank
- Receives (and/or declines) and sorts/organizes non-monetary donations or purchased products following standard procedures
Qualifications
Education:
- Completed High School
Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications or Requirements:
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Adult and Child Abuse Registry Checks
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid and CPR certification would be an asset
Experience:
- Previous experience in working with populations experiencing homelessness
- Social work background would be an asset
Skills Required:
- Ability to deal with high stress situations
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to work well in a team and independently
- Good organizational skills
- Strong verbal communication and conflict mediation skills
- Basic computer skills
- Familiarity with COVID-related protocols and confidence in enforcing safety measures
- Moderate physical dexterity required, including an ability to stand for prolonged periods as well as an ability to safely lift up to 20lbs
- Ability to multi-task
Responsibility for Human Resources:
- This position has no staff directly reporting to it but does give some direction to volunteers or supporting staff from outside organizations to ensure the cohesive operation of the drop-in and/or computer lab
Work Environment:
- Working environment is often in a fast-paced setting that requires an ability to multitask
- May encounter the following disagreeable working conditions: dealing with angry/intoxicated people, exposure to verbal abuse and disinfecting dirty tables and chairs
- May be exposed to germs when sanitizing tables and chairs
