Description
The Community Drop-in Worker position exists to support the operation of Weetamah’s Daytime Community Drop-in, which has been implemented on a temporary basis in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. With support from this position, a safe space with various services (food, washrooms, space to rest, books, movies, etc.) will be provided to the community experiencing homelessness.
This is a temporary part-time position at 22.5 hours per week on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the operation of the Daytime Drop-in space in the Weetamah gym alongside other staff/volunteers, including serving snacks, cleaning tables/chairs, screening individuals for COVID-19 upon entry and referring individuals to other services at Weetamah or the surrounding area
- Follow safety measures and ensures drop-in participants are following safety measures, including social distancing and other COVID-related protocols
- Fill out a daily log sheet regarding any points to note throughout the day, and completes incident reports when necessary
- Take note of any food/cleaning supplies that are running low and needing to be replenished
- Communicate with security should any incidents arise
Qualifications
Education:
- Completed High School
Special Licenses, Diplomas, Certifications or Requirements:
- Clear Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Adult and Child Abuse Registry Checks
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention, First Aid and CPR certification would be an asset
Experience:
- Previous experience in working with populations experiencing homelessness
- Social work background would be an asset
Skills Required:
- Ability to deal with high stress situations
- Ability to multitask
- Ability to work well in a team and independently
- Good organizational skills
- Strong verbal communication and conflict mediation skills
- Basic computer skills
- Familiarity with COVID-related protocols and confidence in enforcing safety measures
- Moderate physical dexterity required, including an ability to stand for prolonged periods as well as an ability to safely lift up to 20lbs
- Ability to multi-task and work well in a fast-paced setting
Responsibility for Human Resources:
- This position has no staff directly reporting to it but does give some direction to volunteers or supporting staff from outside organizations to ensure the cohesive operation of the drop-in and/or computer lab
- This position may be responsible to provide a brief written report at the end of a day to the Corps Officer
Work Environment:
- Working environment is often in a fast-paced setting that requires an ability to multitask
- Incumbent may be required to be on their feet for prolonged periods
- Incumbent may encounter the following disagreeable working conditions: dealing with angry/intoxicated people, exposure to verbal abuse and disinfecting dirty tables and chairs
- Incumbent may be exposed to germs when sanitizing tables and chairs
