This is a permanent, part-time position based on 20-24 hours per week.  The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility.  Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.

Standard shifts:  4 Weekdays, 7:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Some evenings and weekends may be required.

  • Responsible for any combination of light cleaning duties to maintain defined work areas in the ministry unit.
  • Ensure the weekly upkeep of the facility i.e. empty all garbage receptacles, put garbage out for designated garbage day and return recycling and composite bins when emptied, vacuum all carpeted areas, sweep all tiled areas, wash floors and baseboards in tiled areas, clean all glass areas; windows and ledges etc. using a ladder where/when needed, dust all offices and furnishings.
  • Ensure kitchen cleanliness at all times.
  • Clean and polish sinks, toilets and counter tops, mirrors and fixtures.
  • Clean washrooms (toilets, sinks, floors), restock washrooms supplies and distribute received material as required.
  • Wipe down all tables, chairs and door handles
  • Checks, cleans, moves, arranges and dusts furniture as required.
  • Identify/report to supervisor any repairs that may require an external service provider.
  • Check doors and windows to ensure building security.
  • Monitor and maintain stock of regularly used items, i.e. mops, brooms, lights, supplies etc., and order/purchases as required.
  • Perform a number of minor repairs and duties in a variety of trade areas such as electrical (change light bulbs), carpentry, plumbing and painting, reports safety concerns and major repair issues to supervisor
  • Spot wash accessible walls, strip and wax floors, spot cleaning, and shampoo carpets as required.
  • Ensure the Corps building is set up and ready for all rental groups, open upon their arrival and secure upon their departure.
  • Maintain the security of property at all times.
  • Ensure the general upkeep of external property such as mowing lawn, keeping sidewalks and entrances clear of snow and ice, including salting, litter pick up and up keep of storage shed.
  • Monitor and maintain mixed cleaner bottles for custodial use. Ensure that all bottles contain WHMIS compliant labeling.
  • Other duties as requested by the Director and/or supervisor.
  • Requires operating industrial cleaning equipment and tools, mopping/sweeping, bending/twisting/lifting, occasional ladder work and fine motor skills.
  • Required to lift/move up to 30 pounds.
  • Requires moderate to high attention when handling hazardous chemicals, and using non-motorized/general cleaning equipment.
  • May be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash.


  • The successful job applicant will have completed High School.
  • Must have valid WHMIS.
  • Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the national Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment
  • Screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
  • A minimum of three (3) months prior related experience, including general familiarity with cleaning and maintenance procedures.
  • Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values
  • Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values & philosophy of The Salvation Army and Hamilton Mountain Citadel.
  • Read and follow the Employee Handbook.
  • As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to Management.
  • Participate in regular direct supervision with immediate supervisor and comply by attending to noted areas needing improvement to ensure maximum job performance.
  • Participate in yearly formal evaluation.
  • Represent The Salvation Army Hamilton Mountain Citadel in a professional manner at all times.
  • Be punctual and work all hours scheduled, advising immediate supervisor anytime this is not possible.
  • Participate in staff development as required.
  • Work as an effective member of the Hamilton Mountain Citadel team, whether staff members or volunteers.
  • Work within agency fire safety, health & safety and emergency procedures.
