JOB PURPOSE:

The Children/Youth Outreach Worker coordinates activities associated with discipleship and outreach ministries to children and youth from the Church and the local community.

Responsibilities

CHARACTERISTIC JOB DUTIES:

The incumbent is responsible for the following range of job duties characteristic, or typical of the job class:

  • Ensures that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is exemplified in the performance of all job responsibilities and through personal example
  • Contributes to the spiritual development of the children and youth in the church by mentoring, discipling, encouraging, and modelling appropriate Christian attitudes and behaviours
  • Coordinates, implements, maintains and assists in the evaluation of programs/ministries relevant to the children/youth of the church and the community at large; may plan and conduct creative worship services, evangelistic outreach, care programs (including on-going visitation), Sunday School and Mid-Week Christian Programming as applicable
  • Prays with and or leads children/youth and family members to faith in Jesus Christ as opportunity permits
  • May develop and implement appropriate leadership development programs for children/youth and those involved in Children/s/Youth leadership; recruits, orients and trains volunteer leaders.
  • Works in cooperation and consultation with the church’s administrative and pastoral care givers in corporate problem-solving for the benefit of the church and individuals
  • Knows and acts in accordance with security procedures of the church to ensure the safety and confidentiality of participants and information
  • Interacts with community partners and resources to provide services to children and youth; may include participation on community committees
  • Maintains written records / logs of activities (including activity reports and statistical information)
  • Screens all volunteers who work with children/youth according to Salvation Army protocol
  • Follows up on Holiday Campers, linking them to the Corps
  • Organizes and holds fundraising events throughout the year     
  • Performs other duties as assigned

NOTE:  Not all incumbents perform all of the duties described above but perform a similar range of duties.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION LEVEL ATTAINED:

Completion of High School (an alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable)

Post-secondary education with an emphasis in Biblical Studies or Child/Youth Ministry an asset

NOTE:  An alternative level of education and experience may be acceptable.

 

SPECIAL LICENSES, DIPLOMAS, CERTIFICATIONS OR REQUIREMENTS:

The successful applicant will hold/have:

·        - Prior related experience working with and/or teaching children’s Christian education

·        - Ability to give oversight to volunteers

·        - Independent worker

·        - Flexibility and willingness to work irregular hours (e.g., evenings, weekends)

·        - Criminal Record Check and internal Salvation Army Abuse Registry clearance

·        - Youth/Children leadership training, Biblical studies

 MINIMUM PRIOR RELATED EXPERIENCE:

The incumbent must have the following experience before hire:

Prior related experience, including, experience working with children and youth.

 

PHYSICAL EFFORT/DEXTERITY REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires frequent set-up and clean up for activities, participating in sports activities, keyboarding, and occasionally transporting youth and standing.

The incumbent is required to lift more than 20 pounds.

 

CONCENTRATION REQUIRED:

The performance of the job requires attention when teaching, giving advice/peer support, studying, planning and development.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR FINANCIAL RESOURCES:

The incumbent’s responsibility for Financial Resources:

The incumbent has input to and/or participates in preparing budgets with respect to the departmental budget.

 

RESPONSIBILITY FOR HUMAN RESOURCES:

The incumbent’s responsibility for Human Resources:

The incumbent is responsible as a group/work leader. She/he is responsible for providing direction and checking results, but generally works along with those supervised. 

The incumbent directly supervises between 1 - 6 volunteers.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The incumbent’s work environment is typically at Church, in community centres, camps, homes, schools and restaurants.

The incumbent works in generally agreeable conditions, with the following exceptions:

Dealing with angry/upset children/parents

·        Irregular hours

·        The incumbent may have little to no travel required.

EXPOSURE TO HAZARDS:

The job incumbent may be exposed to the risk of minor harm, injury or illness due to:

·        Physical attacks by others

·        Exposure to infectious diseases

·        Moving objects

·        Risk of sport related injuries

HOURS:            15 hours per week
