HOURS: 35 hrs/week


Position Purpose Summary:

The Chaplain provides crisis and ongoing supportive Bible-based counselling and referral services, to clients and/or their families.


  • Provides spiritual counselling and uses every opportunity to pray with and share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with clients/families, enabling them to become part of the Body of Christ
  • Through crisis and ongoing empathetic, supportive counselling, assists individuals in determining appropriate and mutually agreed upon goal achievement processes; facilitates effective problem-solving behaviours of the client/family
  • Acts as a resource for church/community ministries staff
  • Recommends and assists in the development of new program/policy initiatives to address ongoing client needs
  • Maintains confidentiality and keeps accurate client files/case notes
  • Prepares written reports as requested by other agencies or individuals, following receipt of client’s endorsed disclosure authorization and in accordance with internal policies and procedures
  • May provide supervision to students on placement
  • Networks with The Salvation Army, government and community social service providers to coordinate resources for the benefit of clients
  • Conducts educational and therapeutic groups for clients/families, as appropriate
  • Regularly attends to self-care through appropriate de-briefing, etc.
  • Actively pursues personal and professional development through reading relevant texts and professional journals, attending relevant workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.
  • Works in accordance with the Code of Ethics for the incumbent’s professional association; ensures full compliance with child protection legislation and intervenes when necessary
  • Conducting funerals and attending feasts
  • Performs other duties as assigned



  • The successful job applicant will have completed an Undergraduate University degree (e.g., B.A., B.Sc. B.Sc.N.).


  • Minimum of one year of prior related experience, including pastoral ministry, experience in direct counselling environments, which may include issues of homelessness, mental health, unemployment, abuse, addiction, parenting and/or marriage. The incumbent must also have experience in one-on-one and group counselling.

Required Skills/Knowledge:

  • The performance of the job requires attentive listening (for supervision, counselling, conflict resolution, etc.), and moderate attention when doing computer work.

PREFERRED SKILLS/capabilities:

The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters regularly, or on a relief basis, or has responsibility for the wise use of his/her own resources. He/She may be authorized to spend, disburse, or collect small amounts of cash. The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.


Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Completion of our online Armatus Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training
