Description

This position provides support to the Head Cook and Hospitality Manager in the operation of the Kitchen, Dining Hall, Cooks and Kitchen Support Staff.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Administration

  • Work under the direction of the Head Cook and Hospitality Manager to organize shifts and prepare meals according to the menus provided.
  • Assist the Head Cook and/or Hospitality Manager in receiving, verifying, and storing food orders.
  • Assist Head Cook and/or Hospitality Manager in making an inventory of supplies and food at the end of the summer season. Prepare all food and supplies for storage as needed.

General Duties

  • Assist in the constant cleanliness and sanitation of freezers, walk-in fridges, stove and food preparation surfaces.
  • Supervise the work of Kitchen Support Staff and/or Assistant Cook daily.
  • Oversee and direct weekly clean-up of the kitchen/dining hall at the end of each week.

Other related duties as assigned.

MANAGERIAL/Technical Leadership RESPONSIBILITY:

  • This position reports directly to the Head Cook.
  • This position supervises kitchen support staff and/or the assistant cook.

FINANCIAL AND MATERIALS MANAGEMENT:

  • Assist with supervision of receiving and stocking food and kitchen supply orders.
  • Use of various kitchen tools and appliances (ex: knives, stove/oven, dishwasher, electric mixers, etc.).
  • Use of various cleaning chemicals and tools (ex: broom, mop, vacuum, etc.).

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • The individual is able to live onsite with a meals and accommodations taxable benefit if needed.
  • This position requires long hours standing on hard surfaces.
  • This position requires individuals to work in close proximity to others in a fast-paced and sometimes crowded environment. The work can be physically taxing and requires good mobility.
  • This position pays an hourly salary at 40 hours/week.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Food Safe Certification preferred
  • Culinary education and training preferred
  • Standard First Aid + CPR & AED required
  • Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector is required (no more than 3 years old).
  • Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements:

·       Minimum 1 year experience working in a busy kitchen/food preparation & service environment.

·       Experience overseeing menu planning and food supply orders.

·       Minimum 1 year leading and supervising a kitchen and its personnel is preferred.

·       Respect and understanding of The Salvation Army - its mission, culture, and values

PREFERRED SKILLS/CAPABILITIES:

Skills and Capabilities:

·       Flexible and have a good disposition.

·       Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.

·       Willingness to train and coach youth in food preparation, safe practices, health & safety, cleanliness/sanitization and the importance of good service to diners.

·       Demonstrate support for the overall mission and goals of PLC summer camping through food service. Successful candidates, prior to hiring, may be required to provide:

  • Background check consent
  • A clear vulnerable sector screening
  • A clean drivers abstract
  • Completion of our online Praesidium Abuse Training and required Health and Safety training

DAYS and HOURS of work:

The chosen applicant will be required to work either a morning (6:00am-2:00pm) or afternoon (10:00am-6:00pm) shift, Monday-Friday. We ask for flexibility with hours, as they may need to be adjusted depending on the needs of each camping group. There may also be a requirement to work some weekends, in addition to the regular hours. Lodging and meals can be provided as a taxable benefit for those applicants requiring same.
