ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW

The Finance Department is comprised of approximately 150 professional and support staff that provide corporate finance, accounting, financial reporting, investment, treasury management, and pension and payroll services to The Salvation Army. About half of the group is based at the Army’s head office in Toronto, with the remaining staff located in Calgary and St. John’s.

JOB PURPOSE

The Bilingual Operations Accountant is responsible for the entry of cash receipts and recording accounts payable transactions, with a primary focus on our locations in Quebec. They will prepare and process general and recurring journal entries in support of these functions. In addition, the incumbent will respond to client and/or vendor enquiries and provide support to Senior Operations Accountants as required.

Responsibilities

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Record all cash receipts in proper general ledger accounts, including accounts receivable subledger, loans subledger and any other required schedule
  • Review/code accounts payable transactions based on invoices and other approved documents presented in workflow or by Salvation Army units and distribute expenses to the general ledger
  • Understand Salvation Army policies to ensure expenditure claims are appropriate and accurate
  • Follow up with clients and/or vendors concerning outstanding deposits or incomplete accounts payable transactions
  • Ensure transactions are reflected in the proper accounting period
  • Maintain or exceed established service levels in supporting our units missions

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

  • Fluent in English and French
  • Completion of a post secondary / college degree program of at least 3 academic years in commerce/accounting/social sciences from an accredited program;
  • A minimum of 1 year of prior related experience, in an accounting environment working with accounts payable and/or accounts receivable systems and processes
  • Must have intermediate to advanced MS Excel spreadsheet skills, with knowledge of MS Word
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential
  • Detail oriented with strong organizational skills
  • Positive, professional attitude and works well in a team environment
