According to the World Bank, educating girls is a key part of eradicating global poverty, because educated women tend to be healthier, have access to better jobs, marry, and have fewer children.

Kocharla attends The Salvation Army William Booth Junior College in Bapatla, India. She’s a senior student studying math, physics, and chemistry. She chose this school because of its esteemed reputation—and because she knows it will help meet her goals.

“I’ve had an interest in engineering since I was a child. I want to read well, study well, and become a civil engineer,” says Kocharla. “This college is giving me the quality education I need to do that, and it also provides me with practical hands-on learning. Some colleges don’t have instruments in the lab, but at this school we have access to all the instruments we need. The teaching faculty is super here, and it’s clear that the teachers care.”

Your gifts also help support the Bapatla Girls’ Hostel, where Kocharla lives while attending school.

Thanks to caring people like you, The Salvation Army in Canada currently supports more than 30 schools worldwide. Your generosity is fueling a generation of women leaders and empowering girls to bridge the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) gender disparity in the developing world.
