Canada: A rich nation with poor children

Hundreds of thousands of Canadians are going hungry and have to go to food banks because they don’t have enough to eat. It is a sad fact that almost half of the people using food banks are children.
According to the 2010 Report Card on Child and Family Poverty in Canada, one in 10 children live below the poverty line.
On November 24, 1989, the House of Commons unanimously passed an all-party resolution that resolved to eliminate child poverty in Canada by the year 2000. Canada’s child poverty rate actually increased between the mid-1990s and the mid-2000s.
Yet, while there are thousands of children who are ill-housed and hungry, there are many more who are ‘poor’ for reasons that have nothing to do with low-income. They are the abused, neglected and unloved.
The Salvation Army believes that poverty shouldn’t be a life sentence, that it’s an attack on one’s identity, and that the issue deserves everyone’s personal attention.
