Emergency Preparedness Week, May 1 to 7, is an annual event whereby activities are organized across Canada to raise awareness of the importance of having an emergency kit; making an emergency plan; and identifying risks in the region. These three simple steps can help Canadians prepare for all types of emergencies.

The Salvation Army Toronto Harbour Light, a seven-storey flagship facility located in the heart of the city, recently received an award from the Ontario Association of Architects for design excellence. Opened in 2009, the beautifully designed building stands at the site of the original Harbour Light Centre that was opened in 1961.

The state-of-the-art facility not only offers the homeless and addicted a place to live in dignity while solving social and medical issues, but is prepared for emergencies.
• In the event of a power outage a 12-cylander emergency generator can provide power for up to a week.
• It is strategically located and can deploy its street vans and emergency disaster vehicles quickly.
• Its industrial kitchen can prepare and distribute meals quickly.
• The sanctuary can be used as a morgue. Building automation controls can reduce the temperature rapidly and loading docks are capable of unloading caskets.
• The sanctuary can also be used to house people.
