Agri-Food Donation Brings Fresh Items to the Table

Donation brings fresh food to Salvation Army food banks

The Salvation Army has been able to increase its fresh food capacity across Ontario thanks to a generous donation from Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) in collaboration with Igloo Food equipment.

The project, which has been in the works for a year, came to fruition when AAFC provided the opportunity and Igloo Food Equipment gave a generous discount on price and delivery. Thirty commercial appliances, fridges and freezers were delivered to foodbanks in communities from small towns such as Bracebridge, Ont., to the Greater Toronto Area to the nation’s capital in Ottawa.

Outfitting a food bank with commercial grade equipment has many benefits. The Salvation Army is now able to provide families with fresh and healthy food options supplied by local sources. The capacity to offer dairy and fresh produce ensures greater food security for those suffering financial difficulties.

“Adding fresh food at our food banks allows us to contribute to the physical wellness of families experiencing the negative impact of COVID-19 crisis,” says Major Rick Zelinsky, divisional procurement officer, Ontario Central-East division.
