In rural Newfoundland, at only five years old, Lt. Colonel Sandra Stokes knew she wanted to join The Salvation Army. This decision, along with God’s guidance, led her on an incredible journey of helping those she met, inspiring others with her faith, and shaping the leader she has become in her current position as Divisional Commander for the Atlantic Division.<\/p>\n
“Being part of The Salvation Army and connecting and serving people of all ages has enriched my life,” shared Stokes as she reflected on over 30 years of leadership.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
Becoming a great leader is a journey of continuous learning and growth. It is a process that thrives on embracing challenges that come with each new day.<\/p>\n
“There are so many qualities of any great leader. Those who are visionaries,\u00a0adaptable, curious, resilient, empathetic, and authentic; but in addition to all of these, being self-aware is critical,” says Stokes. “By knowing who I am and knowing who I am not; by knowing what I can do and what I cannot do; and by having the courage and understanding to invite others to come into my space and into my life to be a support, to be that strength I need.”<\/p>\n
When reflecting on who inspired her as a leader, Stokes highlighted retired officer, Lt. Colonel Susan van Duinen who also exemplified the ‘5 Cs’ – character, confidence, courage, consistency, and compassion – traits that Stokes continues to use as a measure for her own leadership and those around her.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn life, we get distracted by titles, roles, and where we end up or don\u2019t. My advice is to shine where you are,\u201d shared Stokes. \u201cShow up, do the best you can, be obedient to God, take risks, and keep yourself focused on the main thing – the main One.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
As we enter opportunities of uncertainty, it is critical to know that wherever God leads you, He will provide.\u00a0\u201cLife is sweet and beautiful, but it is also short. Celebrate it. Do not take yourself too seriously. You won\u2019t get it right all the time, but keep living in every moment, laughing every day, and loving beyond words.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day I wake up smiling, excited to start the day and to see what God has in store, for not only my own life but The Salvation Army,\u201d says Stokes. \u201cHe continues to use The Salvation Army as a partner in his work and I consider myself blessed to be one of those mission partners. To have the opportunity to be a leader and\u00a0plant seeds daily through the support we provide others and to see the difference it makes as they grow.\u201d<\/p>\n
In May, Lt-Colonel Sandra Stokes will move to London, England, to start her newly appointed position as Assistant Chief Secretary at International Headquarters for The Salvation Army.
